@jiaan100 I think there's a misunderstanding. You absolutely have a right to see or hear people and imitate what they do. You don't have a right to copy someone's work then claim it as your original creation. We talk about creators who "hold copyright" or "have copyrighted" their work, that gives them the right to seek legal redress if you present their substantially original work as your own. It's not restricting your rights because you never had that right. One could argue further that rights aren't natural, that the only natural right you have is to try to survive, we made these other rights to make society more survivable. If you wanted to talk about whether copyright law does more harm than good, that seems reasonable. "I have a natural right to your stuff" seems less reasonable.

@SamuraiGuy It's a strong indicator. The "even if I did" part shouldn't be in the conversation if you didn't do it, its presence is a red flag that will make most people assume you probably did it. It's like you're covering your ass.

@jiaan100 that's not using my reasoning, those books were already purchased, you're not violating copyright by selling a possession. You didn't make a copy. Quit fooling around.

@jiaan100 the reason I've never heard of that right to distribute the works of others us that the only right in those cases has been granted to the copyright holder, hence "copyright" which people have repeatedly attempted to explain

@jiaan100 copying then claiming a substantially original work as your own, stop ignoring distinctions. Why would anyone waste their time making anything original? I would appreciate an actual discussion of copyright not whatever you think you're doing.

@aspenyoung2914 effectively. I still won't upvote it since the topic is a bit more complex but that's the most I.portant determining factor in most cases. I have rights to what I've declared to be mine because a powerful organization will help me uphold them

@SamuraiGuy it's enough to make what's likely a pretty accurate snap judgment, I'm not a judge so I don't need to worry about writing a summary or delivering a verdict
