Arguably the rural areas are worse. Everyone who can seems to be leaving those places for better jobs elsewhere either in cities or right outside them.

@tommyscott9085 rural areas are less healthy, less prosperous, and less educated. Nick has videos os down and out rural areas like Appalachia.

@yotojojo522 rural Appalachia and then rural south are the worst but even rural areas of the Midwest are struggling with job and population loss. Opioid addiction is rampant too. Those areas have been fertile ground for populist arguments against immigrants, blacks, and “elites.”

@DontUputThatEvilOnMe rural areas have less crime but hardly no crime because they don’t have any people. Not really a good comp. Rural areas are more government dependent and often have a shortage of young and skilled people. Nothing wrong with preferring to live in a rural area but overall opportunities are more limited there.

@DontUputThatEvilOnMe not really that surprising in that rural areas are less dense so people interact less. Rural populations are older too (young men commit most crimes) so it makes sense you would see fewer attacks, thefts, drug gangs fighting over turf etc.

@kidwichita but it's often the blue areas of red states that drive those economies ie. Dallas, Houston, Nashville, Austin, Charlotte, Salt Late etc.

@DannyWatson-oo1yy so in other words no one lives there or it’s a gated community for rich people?

@mikenb11_51 violent crime was worse overall in early 90s and has been in steep decline since until last few years when it spiked some but to listen to politicians, social media, cable news you would think it’s complete anarchy even though most cities were growing rapidly before pandemic tot he point that housing has become so unaffordable for many.

@mikenb11_51 crime rates often are higher where more people live and thus interact. Cities also have many areas with relatively low violent crime. Even in cities like Chicago the murders are often confined to a few of the worst areas with the more affluent parts being relatively unscathed. Theft and other non violent crime is naturally going to occur more frequently in places with nicer cars, more people wearing expensive jewelry, more stores to shoplift from etc. Most places in the US have seen crime rates spike in the last three years, but major cities still have far lower rates than 20-30years ago. For example NYC had 438 murders in 2022 which was about the same as 1960. The city had over 2200 in 1991 for example.

@DontUputThatEvilOnMe yes being around more people is going to increase the chances of being a crime victim. Not exactly shocking. Cities and their immediate suburbs also offer more jobs, better educational opportunities, better healthcare, more culture so all in all, a net plus. Nothing wrong with people who prefer living in rural areas and they matter too but reading social media you would swear that demolishing all cities and returning to some agrarian society is the answer to all societal ills.

@gerardgarcia7127 nah rural areas are definitely struggling. The rural areas that aren’t tend to be areas where wealthy people have vacation homes such as Jackson Hole, WY. Rural areas have been hit hard by the loss of manufacturing and other industries. Farming also doesn’t require as many people either.

Probably because a lot of people are leaving CA due to there being too many people, too expensive, and bad traffic. There is no real way to vote to change that other than leaving. Maybe if CA would allow more housing to be built that would help with housing costs but not necessarily the other issues. Sometimes people just want a change of pace. I am not sure you can blame CA's issues on it's tolerance for gays, acceptance of POC, desire for access to abortion, etc.

@hoopty. not many although more Latino people live there than you might imagine and state is more diverse thanks to large companies moving there and some Mormon converts from overseas.
2
@DontUputThatEvilOnMe not really. You seem to think cities have more crime is proof overall failing when it just isn’t he case. Rural areas are overall worse off overall for various reasons.
2
@Countcho counties that voted for Biden have 70 percent of the nations GDP. Remember, Trump gets most of his support from economically depressed rural areas that are angry at elites in coastal areas for “selling them out” to China, immigrants, gays, etc. If red areas were more prosperous, wouldn’t the people in them be happier?
1
@gerardgarcia7127 meh Texas has plenty of rural area sub decline. It’s actually the cities they drive the economy there.

@matildesantos4215 some are yes. Lots of burned out rust belt areas in upstate NY though.
