I would say the Russians gained the most technology from the Type 21 for a very different reason. There was very little to the Type 21 that British, American and especially Dutch submarine designers hadn't thought about in the prewar years. Swede Momsen proposed building a streamlined test hull in the 1930s. His got to do this with the USS Albacore. The Dutch invented the Snorkel long before Germany built Submarines. The US already had a better propulsion plant. I don't know enough about RN submarine R&D to know where they were going. Where the Type 21 outshined western tech was optical and acoustic sensors. The Soviets had little of knowledge. You can say that the Germans did proof of concept for the US and UK. As the GUPPY conversions show the basic Balao-Tench Class were actually better submarines than Type 21 because when converted they out performed it. It is a mistaken belief that the post war Tang Class were just Type 21 derivatives. They were independent designs based on the GUPPY experience.
