  1. The US Navy tried to implement the fleet submarine concept again in the 1970s with the Los Angeles (688) Class. It didn't work any better because they couldn't work out the IFF issues. The boats tended to get attacked by the supporting ASW forces in exercises. The direct support concept was quickly abandoned for the so-called indirect support aka do your own thing mission.

  3. I went aboard the Silversides several times in my high school days when she was still being used as a dockside trainer at the Randolph St Pier in Chicago. A second submarine, USS Runner, was also based there and it is my understanding that the Runner acted as target for the two Maritime Patrol Squadrons based at the now closed Glenview Naval Air Station north of the City.
