I would dispute that U-Boats actually deployed during the war were technologically superior to the fleet boat. They were deeper and faster diving and more maneuverable but that was because they were smaller. Fleet boats had a more technically advanced propulsion system, more underwater endurance and superior habitability. The later two because they were bigger. The Type 21 was a big leap in technology but was a flawed design. The Tench class guppy conversions were superior in almost every way to the Type 21.

@Jodonho The Albacore hull is optimized for underwater performance. The last class of US diesel submarines used the same hull form and were faster (for 30 minutes) than the first nukes.
