The USS Des Moines led a ceremonial task force into Lake Michigan in 1959 to honor the opening of the St Laurence Seaway. She was larger than some of the early Dreadnaughts. Update: my memory fails after 60 years. The cruiser was not the Des Moines but the Baltimore class USS Macon. What was truly impressive was the number of ships involved in Operation Inland Seas. Here is the order of battle: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Inland_Seas

Given the size and draft of the biggest Lake Boats a DDG-51 would have no trouble transiting the locks. Update: the locks are 32' deep. A DDG-51 has a draft of 30.5' Update II: I got curious to see how big a ship can get through the Soo Locks. An LHA can just make it through on the beam with about 5' of depth to spare. Length is no problem. The Lock is 1200' long.

@kemarisite The first US night carrier operations were in the Atlantic from the USS Guadalcanal in the spring of 1944.

In regards to #1, the North Carolina was the most powerful battleship in commission in May 1941 albeit about as combat ready as the Prince of Wales. The British are the ones who claimed the Bismarck was the most powerful battleship to explain the loss of the Hood.

I have played around with shooting .40 cal out of my 10mm. It works but you get a lot of stovepipes be ause the cartridge isn't powerful enough to fully compress the recoil spring.
