It would have been doubtful that the Fleet Air Arm would have a significant number of Sea Hurricanes and Sea Fires by the end of 1941 without the incentive of two years of war. British torpedo bombers did well in the Atlantic and Mediterranean because they faced no significant naval air threat. The TBD was superior in every way and look what happened to them when facing a modern threat. The RN had a lot of decks but even in 1945 their carriers had less punch the USS Ranger in 1941. The IJN has to be highly favored.

Why? The F4U was a superior fighter.

@dropdead234 Does the fastest single seat fighter in US service (post war) ring a bell. The Corsair and FW 190 were the best fighters of WWII. They had almost identical performance characteristics for each generation.

@dropdead234 the Fleet Air Arm did not experience that problem.

False. The first Gulf of Tonkin incident was very real and was probably intitiated by an overzealous local commander responding to a special forces raid that did not include the USS Maddox.

I have seen some analysis that said that the completed pens would have stood up to a TACNUKE.
