The first Manskill is creating fire. A true Manskill has three elements. 1 - It Requires Thought 2 - It Demands Effort 3 - It Produces some Good Unmanly creatures do not wish to think, apply effort or do anything really useful. They prefer to merely tap away on devices created for emasculated creatures. (Man tools tend to have Handles btw)

@MrNed09 so very correct. American Indians in the wet part of the Northwest typically kept fires going I think. No shortage of wood, just a shortage of dry conditions. Hunting seasons do often include improved (dryer) conditions. A true master could succeed in somewhat adverse conditions, but probably not even a master when negatives add up. - Everything wet - Rainy - Windy - Wrong kind of local wood sources.

Even humans who never learned about fire from others can still think, deduce and imagine. Natural forest fires are actually quite common. The charred remains last for decades. Some individuals are more creative and inquisitive than others. - Ancient people were not distracted by stupid devices that dumb down human survival skills.

Same in the Northwest US between the ocean and the crest of the Cascade Range. Would a magnifying glass work ok in Florida maybe?

I sometimes practice primitive methods for the skills, but I live outdoors as a long hiker and build far more fires than most. I can build dozens of fires with an ounce or two of small wood matches. Typically one match is all I use for an evening + next morning fire. My back up (not my only one) is a butane wind proof lighter which I typically use only for fusing ends of Paracord. It takes a lot to run out of matches if you practice economy.

Your English is very good. Do not fear mild disapproval. Use your age to an advantage. Meaning: try things that people might think are a little crazy. At worst they will probably forgive you for your age. Just don't let them know how smart you actually are. Find a few random old-timers, men who have lived outdoors. They will give you ideas that fit to the environment you are in.

It seems to me that iron is superior to stone. Processed iron is also abundant everywhere. (Steel road markers, etc.) Forge, hammer and anvil can go very far for making all kinds of other tools and necessities. The refinement has already been done, but things like hardening, shaping, etc. would need developing and to me anyway they would be vastly more useful than going back to the stone age.

@newenglandknapper6261 Those are reasonable questions. Actually the rust issue might be one of the biggest presuming a decades long end of civilization. Let's say that's the case. Another question would be massive depopulation or continued growth without industry. This relates to how much existing stockpiles of manufactured tools will be inaccessible. (Still enough for decades imo). But let's say there's no access there either. Where would a person get recyclable/reusable raw metals, etc. if they hole up away from formerly developed areas. I am in the continental US btw, the inland Northwest, not baren land, not densely populated either. If I wanted to go to the MOST remote spot of the entire continental U.S., I could DRIVE to within about 20 miles of that spot before I couldn't drive anymore and had to walk. This is the rare extreme case. Truth is that it's rare to be more than a mile or two from some road. Wherever you have roads in the US, you have steel, and you have vehicles. I have not even mentioned railroads which have high quality steel - probably millions of tons. As I am thinking on it, there are also cell towers nearly everywhere. Steel fencing, towers. (Solar panels, electrical wiring, etc.) Now if I was a really fearful prepper, I might put some plans and supplies aside to convert a cell tower into a wind generator. Many towers are remote enough.

Btw I'm a hiker and a map enthusiast. I have also done some road building and I've done low voltage technical work. I am not a specialization intensive prepper or bushcrafter. My thing is Manskills. Survivalism, bushcraft, etc. are largely subsets of Manskills. Mostly I prefer to see the big picture, but I don't shy away from hands on stuff. I do not rely on money to solve all of life's problems. I aspire to be a realist, but like many classic tragic warriors, I have a romantic streak...maybe not like some extreme preppers. If I force myself to think actual worst case scenario, I suspect that the natural environment will be hit much harder than the left over tools of civilization. The wise old farmer will be the one to protect because he knows how to feed people, and the strongest village will not be the one with the most rifles (we have plenty), but the one with the most people. This is not a new thing. Late edit: I do have one skill I'm really good at...pushing people outside their comfort zone. It's not always appreciated, but I do get respect in the long run. Too bad it doesn't help with fund shortages in the short run.

Sadly, even the practice of bushcraft requires some adjustment to the times. STEALTH fire making is often an essential factor these days unless you are really really deep in the woods. Friction techniques simply work best when conditions are sufficiently dry. Such conditions often mean that big brother outlaws fire building. Btw, bushcraft doesn't come easy, nor does it attract irresponsible personality types imo. Bushcrafters are not the cause of wildland fires, but to avoid becoming a victim to the enemies of freedom, stealth practices should be employed. My preferred method is to build my fires in a pit with a connecting air channel or tunnel to another pit.

I learned a great lesson the first time I succeeded in creating fire the hard way: Never neglect to have matches, ever. It has been almost 20 years. I have never been without my matches.
