  1. the rich and big biz fear nothing more than a peaceful and well organized consistent mass movement. The forced the hand of JFK and LBJ (their sympathies for the cause of the black people did not mean the D party was going to alienate the racist Dixiecrats of the South). They even forced Nixon to end the Vietnam war. (Sadly he still got away with a LOT of shit). The organized and unified left (Communists to center left and unions, all of them) gave FDR the leverage to get the New Deal passed. They actually made him consider it. Now, he did not mind twist arms (of Dems that stood in the way - nothing new under the sun), to his credit he reacted to the potential public unrest. He was from a rich and well connected family and likely had a big ego. but being rich and from a good family get's old after some generations, so he may have liked his role as benefactor of the masses. And he had the decisive personality to force some, the political smarts to play the game (always considering that the New Deal favored the white population and white farmers). maybe that was all he could get, or he did not bother enough. It is possible that a part of the oligarchs (those that were reasonable and saw the pitchforks coming - this was 1933 and the Russian Revolution was in 1917) found it easier to give in to a part of his demands because he was one of their club.

  2. After the Rainbow coalition had gotten Obama into office, it was his job to deflate the energy and to sideline and distract the grassroots - on behalf of the big donors. He had sold out already in 2008 and the big donors do not want the masses enthusiastic and active. They could be getting ideas (among other things realizing their power). It was all cute to get get Obama elected, and the "first black president" was as good as distraction as the "first female president". But then they wanted the enthusiastic base to disperse. Well organized grassroots with some reach scare the shit out of the oligarchs.
