Sanders won his first race (mayor of Burlington at the age of 40) with 10 (TEN) votes after the recount (the Republicans did not even have their own candidate against a seemingly unbeatable well established, several times elected candidate). Before over the course of many years he had campaigned in the races for Gov., Senate, etc. with a small left leaning independent party (the cititzens of Vermont never "wasted" their vote on them - best result was 5 % or 4 %, it was 4 races in total - although I think he increased name recognition, but it never showed in election results). Of course the party and Sanders had to BUILD name recognition and there was never big corporate money involved). After that I think the party dissolved or got inactive and it looked as if his political passions and his efforts would go nowhere. Then folks asked him to run for mayor. Some were not happy with the corporate Democrat that dominated the scene. Sanders had experience with political campaigns after all - lol. That might explain why he genuinely values a grassroots approach. He owes his career to that (And before he became a PAID politician / public servant, he was more or less a passionate political activist/educatorwith odd jobs to make ends meet. Meaning the good middleclass standard life started when he became mayor.
