It is an anachronistic transposition of national concepts. Breton himself says that the German infantry would have killed the king of France on the spot: and the mercenaries of Brabant were massacred by the French because their life was not worth the ransom. It was a question of status: Breton says the same about the French knights. Furthermore, "Otto and his people" were excommunicated and treated as such: for Breton the emperor flees abandoning the eagle. And French historiography attributes a pagan character to the enemy through the symbol of the black dragon.
