If the Government had promoted Speak English Campaign instead, the average Singaporean would probably have done better in their career advancement. They encouraged the commoners to speak mandarin but the elite management themselves speak good English and could not speak proper Chinese. Ok but now, the timing for speak more mandarin probably is right as the young generations are quite proficient in English because their parents were the group that realised the importance of English instead of Chinese in Singapore in the past decades.

Ho Chi Wang You wrong! Are you even a local, try speaking to one in a local coffeeshop to get their perspective on this matter. Also my comment is based on a local context. The executive environment here mainly rewards the English speaking citizens. They will be the ones to enter management roles. India is a huge country with a lot of other infrastructure issues and use of English is irrelevant in the discussion. Most of the Indian people cannot speak English too

Ho Chi Wang Btw I often giggled at the appalling standard of our politicians struggling to speak mandarin in public address. They sounded like robots. Maybe with the exception of Mr. Ong Teng Cheong. He can speak Chinese well and is the only President I remember

@One Time If you are so power you should write in actual Chinese characters instead of generic pinyin without the four tones

@peterpaullee9952 Dialect you mean? Almost gone but Hokkien profanities were retained.

@peterpaullee9952 I am quite sad of the situation. At one point I was even seeking out whether any schools conduct teochew language courses. A friend told me to be practical and don't waste time. She said after you learn, who can you use it with?

@peterpaullee9952 Is that Taiwan? I have to resign to fate that these languages are destined to disappear in Singapore
