One way of preventing this from happening ever again, post-Trump, is for the commanders of these federal troops to be held personally responsible, to be dragged into court and punished for whatever transgressions of the law their troops committed - unless they can produce the guilty individual troopers to face charges. If none of the commanders are willing to admit just where their troops were located at the given time, they should ALL be held responsible. That is what was done in Nuremberg after WW", the top Axis commanders were held responsible for their troops as a whole - and individual troopers were unable to hide behind the "I was just following orders!" excuse. The same should apply here. If not, the next wannabe US dictator (the WILL be more of them in the future!) will repeat this performance with impunity. They will at least think twice if they KNOW they will be held ultimately responsible if their coup fails.
