Yep. Sad really. And the irony is that it seems American history teaches that in the first 3 years of the war that the USA wasn't an active combatant that really they were fighting the axis on the side.... Which is true. But in ways that were profitable to the us government or us companies. There is nothing wrong with this of course. It's call real politik . But surely history should be taught with its positives and negatives?

@MrChickennugget360 I think you have it there. As an outsider (I'm English). It seems the huge amount of money that's thrown around by lobbyists really do cause you huge problems (and wastage). Interest groups have an impact here. But nothing like you chaps have. And they have to sell their stories using the media and public relations. If they just throw money around, our media tends to quickly destroy politicians who take said money. It probably helps we don't just have 2 parties as well. Interest groups can't latch onto a party and know they have a 50% chance of getting what they want. Not to mention we don't have a president that belongs to a party who can also be "bought"

@parrot849 here in the UK we only have the cinematic kind (I am very glad to be able to say!) And I had a feeling that's what you meant (I was playing devils advocate). I thank you for your service. I have friends in our armed forces and my uncle is a retired police officer. Any member of such professions deserve respect. Good thoughts from North east England Gary :)

It's definitely slang in England. I don't know about the other countries in the British isles 🤔

@crazylemonz1957 only as a brief wrap up of those classes. Much as he did for vanguard. I dare say he has enough content to go through anyway 🤣

43 minutes. That's more than a couple!

@horusfalcon it can mean that. It can mean miss represented. It can mean a design that doesn't seem sound. It can refer to poor workmanship. It doesn't suggest intentional wrong doing or something criminal Of course it can mean those things. But it would be fairly normal for me to say to my nephew "you took the last ice lolly, you Dodgy bugger". That would be more meant in jest. We use "shifty" but that does generally mean something negative/suspicious.

Same in the UK. Plenty of ships but no money. We had truly crippleing war debt. Rationing was still around in the late 50s. Large cities in ruins. Ships were scrapped for money and raw material to rebuild. I really wish warspite had been gifted to the USA though. You had the space to turn her into a museum ship. And you had all our money 🤣 least you guys could have done was save a hero of 2 world wars for us lol

@canadianmmaguy7511 what on earth are you on about? First of all. I've never started a war in my life. Secondly. The British empire of the time did not start world war 2. Thirdly. The UN was formed after the war. If anyone had discussed such an organisation in the 1930s then you would be assumed to be talking about the league of nations. This is really really basic history. If you would like me to recommend some texts that cover the lead up to ww2. I'd be happy to do so. The formation of the UN is outside my specialty. I mastered in 1900-1945. But I'm sure there are plenty of texts to choose from. I don't mean to sound incredulous. After all, we didn't know anything until we were taught. But speaking without understanding the topic is how miss information spreads. The history of ww2 is too important to distort.

Interesting. But I have to wonder if a gun fight isn't more terrifying than exciting. I've never seen a gun fired. But if one were pointed at me. I dare say I would be a lot of things, "excited" wouldn't be one of them lol

William Mulvaney such a shame. I know you guys had a rough start with the indians and the slavery and racism and suchlike. But you really did try democracy didn't you. I wonder if being such a wealthy nation corrupted (much like power in general)

@horusfalcon as for diriving from dickins. I'm sure his works popularised certain terms. But for the stories to be believed by the lower-middle class public. I can't imagine he was the first person to use the word. But that's more a hunch.

@Akren905 THAT is funny.

@cleveland2286 that wasn't just something that happened in America you know? Also. I happen to live in what was county Cleveland in England. So that's interesting for some reason

@Landon Littrell I don't doubt they teach lend lease. It's a great advert for capitalism. And it also is a way of saying the us were in it from the start. The truth of course is much much more complicated (as it usually is). The fact that Churchill had to beg to be allowed to buy armaments definitely isn't a good advertisment for capitalism. I can't comment on your other statements. Covid has put the baiden (not sure how to spell it) presidency out of the news. But we of course heard about trump in the news at the time. Obviously it was very worrying. Not sure that the American public really understood just how incredulous the rest of the world were. I don't know what was more terrifying. That he could launch nucular weapons. Or that large parts of your country didn't care that he almost never told the truth. So I do have empathy for what your country has had to go through. I add. Our politicians are far from perfect. In fact few are competent. But at least we have never elected an orange version of a despot in the worse eccos of the 1920s and 1930s. Yet anyway.
1
@greghenderson6782 that confused me a little. I mean your fellow trump was so right wing that he may as well have traded in the wig for a Hitler mustach. Not sure about the new guy. But he's not been in long has he.

@cleveland2286 ah I'm with you. Sorry, mistake of communication by internet. The world's economy was back on track by 1940 though. I'm not sure when the GD actually officially ended. But the worse was definitely over. Though the UK and British empire, France and Germany were all feeling the effects of the "missing generation" so that didn't help. I always had the impression that the us having come away from the Great war with few losses and lots of income. Plus the new deal. Meant that aside from the stock market tanking and the banking system. The country was fairly robust.

@greghenderson6782 ah I sincerely apologize! Yeh it does seem so. I remember talking on a forum (for cars of all things) and mentioned I worked for the NHS. Several American posters decided on the spot that I was somewhere between a Marxist and the devil. Just because I worked for a government department that gives free healthcare to the public. Apparently it was "socialised medicine" and that made me next thing to a member of the KGB 😳. This blew my mind. But apparently it's how a lot of Americans see thinks like the NHS.

@isaacdestura7495 cold war is modern. Drach covers ww2 and about two thousand, five hundred years before that. And everything in-between. I'm sure we can let him off with yesterday's news 🤣

@gregorywright4918 the UN was a logical and a hopeful way of making sure ww2 wasn't repeated. I'm proud the UK helped bring it about So god knows why the Canadian MMA guy thinks it was a war aim. And as you rightly say. It was started by Germany. It's arguable whether or not Stalin also got the ball rolling. But the M/R pact certainly gave Hitler a sense of security that allowed him to proceed on sept the first. At this time he was still afraid of a 2 front war.
1
@canadianmmaguy7511 are you simply miss informed? I'd be happy to link you to some brilliant books on the build up to the war :)
1
@canadianmmaguy7511 I'm not sure where you get that from. I have been studying 1870-1945/50 for better part of quarter of a century. What you have said there has only a passing reference to actual historical facts. Not only is it miss representing history. It's spitting on 2 generations who fought and died for freedom and peace. I'm sorry that you have such a jaded and twisted world view. But whatever your opinion of current world politics. The history is history. It's not a matter of opinion but fact. It should be respected.

@canadianmmaguy7511 I think you mean "conscripted" and some were. Many more volunteered. The only ones "forced" were not in the armed forces of the US or the Empire. The ussr forced people to fight and so did the Germans. This was not the case for the democracies. Those few conscripts who did not want to fight, could choose to be medical personnel or object on grounds of conscience. This was very unusual. But did happen. These men (to my knowledge no women were conscripted) still served and contributed to our freedom. No less than volunteers on the home front. Of course thats not the point. It doesn't matter at all how the men and women of the time got into uniform. they still fought and died. They deserve our respect.
