They built cars that were not demanded in sufficient numbers, were very poor imitations for too many decades protected by a prickly web of tariffs, it was a pretty good effort to build something so rust prone in a dry continent without salted roads then Ford & GM pulled the plug as the taxpayer no longer would pay the incentives or extortion, while in the mean time the USA was looking increasingly inward to protect themselves from the GFC.
