  2. It's like when you were a little kid and your parents wouldn't let you watch certain movies. They let on (not in so many words) that they were basically bad and that's why you couldn't watch them. Then you found out that they were the ones they considered the most serious, interesting, enjoyable, funny, best-acted, best-made, and all the rest. When I was about eleven they (accurately) deemed that I was ready, rather swiftly began to relent, and I got to see what all the fuss was about. Once you've seen all those great movies from the great directors of the 1967-75 era, the ones my parents loved, the ones that dealt with every imaginable subject, that left nothing or next to nothing out, there's no going back. I never again fully believed anything any authorities told me, except rarely. (The whole time since has essentially been an attempt to find my own ways of confirming or disproving what others just swallow whole when it's passed to them.)

  3.  @8rr725  I trust people quite a bit more than the average person as far as I can tell. I just don't trust authorities. I think that's what I said. Neither am I angry at my parents for lying about Santa. Did you think I said that too? Doesn't anybody read? But if either of those two things really were true, it would be odd, I'll give you that.

  5.  @Tijuanabill  Ah, the Streisand Effect! I read all about it in January. (It was in connection with the fiasco at St. Pancras station, London involving official visitors from China. One of them unwisely clashed with a harmless and cheerful English piano player (one Brendan Kavanagh)...who happened to have about 1.4 billion YouTube views to his credit. Outstandingly hilarious how it backfired and a minor shockwave circled the globe.) No, this is different. I'm talking about treating people as children, and how it's only ok if they actually are children. And also how once they learn that they were mis-led or lied to, they'll never trust in the same way. But I'm not mad at my parents. They made no Streisand-ian misstep at all. They handled it really well by trusting me as soon as it was right to do so. I think I extracted all the right lessons from it, thanks mostly to them of course, although I take a bit of credit myself. (Why not?😄)

  6.  @8rr725  Yeah, I think that's the case. There are nuances in there (e.g., it also might provide a benefit to children by demarcating a line into the next stage of childhood and helping them grow up and even 'toughen up' maybe) but I think there's probably some hurt and some loss of trust. What's your opinion?
