@V3racious3 "Generally as you exceed 55 MPH exponentially more energy is required to push the air out of the way at those speeds. Some vehicles are as high as 80 or 90 MPH." It's not exponential, it is non-linear. I don't remember if it's double the speed, cube the drag. The best way to find peak performance is to measure it.

Average human being can react to complex motions at best at 200 milliseconds. This means that this young lady will travel 36 feet before she can react. Gets better - it was night time. A person during the day on flat ground can see about four miles. At night she can see no further than the reach of headlights. Chances are that she will have almost no time to react if a deer or other animal were on that highway at the speeds that she chose to drive. Nobody could see her coming, and she'd rear end them, very badly. The driver was showing grotesque reckless disregard for the safety of others. She needed to be stopped immediately.

The Trooper risked his life to end this menace. We should be grateful that such people have accepted these duties.

The Trooper had a duty to end criminally reckless driving. She chose to travel at 122 miles an hour. Since she chose to drive at night she was driving beyond the capacity of most people to react to an obstacle on the road. "The taking of human life or injuring of suspects should be a last resort in extreme situations when there is a greater present danger for not doing so" Which justifies the Trooper's intervention. She chose to drive at criminally reckless speeds. The Trooper put an end to it.

If you don't catch the driver, how do you know who is operating it? You can't put a car in jail, can you? This is closer to the facts - if someone should be running around armed, waving it at people, would you accept that the Police need to step back and let them go home? Why should Police execute people who are recklessly endangering the lives of the public? A 45 ACP standard ball has a kinetic energy of 356 ftlbs. Let's assume that her Volks is an Atlas. Dry weight of 4,343 pounds At 122 miles an hour that's 2,162,520 foot pounds. Her projectile has 5,475 times the kinetic energy.... don't you think that she needed stopped?

A few facts of Physics.... 122 miles an hour is 179 feet per second. Most people can not react to complex motions in under 0.200 seconds. She would travel about 36 feet before she could react. Standard Car length in the US is 15 1/2 feet. So she's booking at 2 car lengths before she can even react. Her kinetic energy if this were a Volkswagen Atlas, curb weight of 4,343 pounds and 179 feet per second, is 2,931,983 joules. In foot pounds that is 2,162,520 foot pounds. A 45 ACP ball at 880 feet per second is 395 foot pounds. This lady's car is the equivalent of 5,475 bullets sailing down the road. I would have preferred that the ASP have one of those ribbon doohickeys that tie up back wheels. What isn't an option is letting her go.

@snowwhite5842 I would prefer a more gentle approach to slowing down moving violations. PITs are impressive. At these speeds that Trooper was putting his life on the line. Be nice if he did not need to do so.

@JohnRunyon "drag is proportional to the square of the speed." I was thinking of power. "Which is "exponential growth" in the common meaning" Exponential growth does exist, but often it's Logistical growth. Cause drag will raise to the point that you get melting. :(

I'd be more scared of driving fast then an encounter with police. Physics wins.
