Loans require either collateral and/or a good credit history, bionic woman. Not everyone has either one of those things, so unsecured debt becomes easier and more accessible even if the borrowing costs are higher.

@AB-sr3jd my comment was addressed to the OP. Credit can be an excellent tool IF it is used wisely. Unfortunately many people do not. A lot of people also fail or refuse to live within their means, hence why we have so much credit card debt. There is also blame to go to employers who don't pay adequate wages to their employees, which makes it difficult for a lot of people to save.
