Your single point of view on Derfflinger is based on the failed interpretation of British politicians about the high seas fleet. The Germans built their 40% (of british fleets) fleet to become a valuable partner of the Brits to secure British homelands, too, when the Brits were active in overseas waters. The High-Seas-Fleet was never built to compete with the Brits, as the Brits interpreted it in arrogance. In real terms the bottled high-seas-fleet was totally useless. To compete the Brits the Germans would have needed a long-range battle-cruiser-fleet to intercept the trading routes. This fatal mistake in British politics caused the decline of Europe as a major power and the handover of the empire to the US in WWII.

If do you read Forester or other writers with their fictional British sea-heroes or more adjusted to the truth, talented pirates, like, in reality, Sidney-Smith or Cochrane (both were the best military seamen in history), you'll read, that all those heroes whether died or were fatigue about war, especially the Napoleonic Wars lasted more than 20 years. Think about, one of my grandfathers served in 2 WWs, after it, he was a broken man. Living in times of war was never funny. There is always war, but most times, as in our case, not in the own backyard.

A ship's commander who feels a pressure to impress his admiral with quick reloads, used in the RN for centuries, ambitioned to cheat with disregardings of the rules, has the wrong admiral.

Lloyd George took already at this time (1902) a war against Germany as a competitor on the international markets into account. "against trade routes you just need long range cruisers". Wrong, as you see due to the battle of the Falklands, which the idiot von Spee lost. The Brits with the incapable Churchill lost WWI already in 1916 after the desastrous Gallipoli campaign. So the Brits must draw the US into the war. Do you think really this loss of prestige was not possible to foresee? The wrong British decision to wage war against Europe was made before the war, and it was wrong as we could see in the result. But the Brits did not learned anything. They repeated the wrong decision again.

About von Spee is to say, he tried to escape in the morning in good weather-conditions & good visability to the open sea from faster enemy-ships. This was the worst option. The best option would have been to attack Port Stanley to enforce torpedo-attacks on anchoring targets and close-range combat. And the crews of sinking German ships would have had the chance to reach the shoreline. The second option would have been to escape into the Falkland Sund. About the Ottoman-Empire is to say, that the control of the Suez-channel was decisive. Without the US-support the war was already over in 1916.

@NashmanNash The threat of the Ottoman Empire was enuogh to bind british ressources in the region. If there was no necessity, why the fool Churchill attacked Gallipoli? Of course the US went into war in 1917, but without US-supplies, the war would had been over in 16. And Britain could not refinance the war on it's own, as the Germans could, Britain received loans from JPMorgan. About von Spee you write nonsense. An admiral who does not know that battlecruisers are faster than armoured cruisers? Even an idiot as von Spee knew it. And the chances to sink or damage battlecruisers at anchor is a much better prospect than to be sunk on long range fire at open seas. About the Dreadnought is to say, that speed is a major factor, as we could see in the a.m. battle of the Falklands. Superiour speed was only possible with oil-firing or the ships became bigger and more heavy. And the additional oil for the Dreadnought came from Persia as i mentioned.

@NashmanNash the third part of Dreadnought's load was oil, but essential. I can read, my friend. Graf Spee failed in the most eminent moment, in a sea-battle. Already at Coronel he made the mistake not to sink all Brits. Your fart is the major objective. You cannot see beyond the shores of your dirty and foggy island. The Brits could not keep their position as the planet's leading power, they needed support. And they decided to deliver this position to the US. Accept the historical results, stop dreaming.

@20chocsaday The Kaiser was more or less an idiot, a psycho in a lifelong carneval, changing 4 times a day the phantasy-uniform. The British royals are not British, they are Germans, like the French nobility, too. The Brits suffered even more under insanity than the Kaiser & his comrades. The thinking that a war among Europeans including the island-apes from the British isles, would solve any problems of competition ruined the (British & other) empire(s) and the entire Europe in favour of the US. Later on, Hitler could no believe it, that the British idiots repeat the same mistake a second time. So, in any result, we are able to watch British policy of this era. @argokarrus2731 You are able to read German? Then read not about naval policy, but on common policies of the II. Reich. For example Wehler's book about the II. Reich. It deals more with economy & the political classes & their privileges, since the failed revolution of 1848/49, which was really a tragedy for the Germans. In Russia and Habsburg the situation was even more miserable.

Unfortunately politics had more influence in Germany than in other nations. Nobody checked in the forefront the wrong calculated fuel consumption of the Hipper-class. The lack of maritime tradition promoted German flag-officers in spite of their failures. Instead being shot on his quarterdeck rear-admiral Kummetz was promoted to vice-admiral. The geo-political construction of the High Seas fleet was an entire failure. Sea power means an ability to be present on the entire planet & not only in the North Sea or the Baltics to fight some British or Russian pirates.
