So there is no self-destruction-mode in battleship's shells. And Brits never hesitated to shoot against a sinking ship, have a look to the Dresden and Emden case already in WW1.

Yes after WWI the Brits established Poland and the Poles had nothing to do than attacking each neighbor soon after the founding of their artificial country and Poland became a military dictatorship in 1926. So your are right, they fought anybody in range. In 1921 their armies were already south and east of Kiev.

This had less to do with the ability of the swordfish pilots, which were, of course well-trained, and more with the ability of the used weapons against those swordfishs. Bismarck's AA-defense would have been more effective against those japanese bombers and torpedo-planes which sunk Repulse and PoW. In Bismarck's case it was generally the wrong decision to dodge the small-sized Swordfish-torpedo instead to take it in the middle of the ship. Afterwards we are always more clever.

There is no real technical and eminent advantage on the planet anywhere, so no war, genociding the inhabitants, makes sense. WWII was the biggest bucaneering raid ever in history. The Soviets and the US were involved in a speed-race to robb German technology. Rockets, jet-engines, nuclear progress, agriculture you name it. They did not cared about the killing of 7 Mio. German people during the war and several mio. after the war. After Yeltsin opened Soviet archives, Putin classified all soviet warfiles soon again. The Brits blacked their own since the war. Your current president Trump analysed or realized the major problem of US forces in general very well. The US are still able to lay an entire country into ashes, but they are not able to win a war anymore.

  19.  @micnorton9487  Rommel and Guderian were comrades in spirit and reality. They were soldiers and no politicians. And they acted to overcome the stubborn stupidity of their teachers in WWI. They did everything for success. Rommel's strength was based on his tactical and organizing talent. Rommel's weakness was his strategic understanding. It makes no sense to lead a desert-attack in North-Africa with supply-lines, which are not secured. 3 quarters of his supplies lay on the bottom of the meditterean. It would have been a better decision to get those useless italian soldiers lost in the desert and to strain with them the British supplies.

In those colonies did not exist any kind of free speech and democracy. So what you are talking about? Insofar all Alliied powers were imperialistic, fascistic powers in the original sense. From the US-Point of view the Bolshevics were supported in the Russian Civil war. This US-stance changed the behaviour of the former Entente Powers France & Britain. Both stopped the support of the White Guards. Stalin was seen as an accident. So Hitler stayed accepted to counter-balance Stalin as long as the chance existed to implement a promoted successor for Stalin. After the Great Purge all possible successors of Stalin were eliminated, so Stalin must be accepted and the focus changed to Germany. Basicly seen WWII was no ideologic conflict. It was simply a race to collect German patents, which were necessary to become a superpower. Better to be quicker than the competitor. As Ismay said, keep the Sovjets out, the Americans in and the Germans down.

But with a crew more than 2 days on action-station you need drugs to stay awake. The same counts for the slow WW2 planes. It makes no sense at all getting downed over the North-Sea by fatigue. And when Guderian demanded permanent refuel and attack from his panzer-crews this is even not to handle without drugs.

And British battleships at this time could not compete with Bismarck's speed. So the question of an earlier altering course of Hood at Denmark strait is always foolish. Bismarck and PE could always alter course, too, to cross the Brit's T by their higher speed, as you can see in the Battle of Tsushima. And Bismarck main-armour-belt was made of better steel than the belts of their british opponents.

That Bismarck not survived is only the failure of the coward Lütjens. If you want, it was a construction failure. Already during the trials in the Baltics it was clear, that Bismarck was not steerable without both rudders.

They, as the most US citizens, never took their own history seriously. The entire move to the West was war, against British canada, against Mexico, the Barbary wars, Japan, against Spain, you name it. War of aggression is the main US business model, being never attacked by anybody. 1944 Bretton Woods gave additionally the world leading currency weapon, better than any fleet. When Woodrow Wilson came into office, the strategy to weaken Europe was defined and published. At least the stupid Brits lost the pound sterling as the leading currency and sold their empire for 53 old destroyers to the US, because Dönitz had won the war at this stage.

When PoW turned her tail at Denmark Strait Bismarck and PE had to close up to shot at point blank range. The gunnery performance of Bismarck and PE was better than the Brits anyway. Against Drachifinel estimation i think KGV-class battleships were a failed construction. The barycentre is very fine, but 4 gun turrets never worked accurate.

Let's compare the Brits, who sent PoW with civil construction-workers on board into battle. The OKM failed definetly in using their capital ships not for the purpose they were built for. The Germans sent the tough admiral Marschall, who wanted to engage single battle-ship convoi-escorts with Scharnhorst and Gneisenau, home and replaced him with the coward Lütjens. The shooting performance of the Germans was much better than on Hood or PoW, a question of the ability of the crews or the ships..... Drachifinel says Bismarck was a failed construction, but this is not concludent to the battle-event of Denmark Strait.

The Baltic Sea is less salted (it is possible to drink the water without dying), so ships have less uplift and sail not as fast as in the Atlantic.

In the aftermatch Hitler asked Raeder, why Lütjens did not finished off the PoW? Several times Hitler blamed the Kriegsmarine for cowardice, so in the consequence Raeder was fired in 1943. And watch the poor Brits. Churchill sold their empire for 53 old US destroyers. This was no deal, it was a defeat.
