Last time of similar sabotage was the Spanish American war which was started by false journalism reporting the fire on a cargo ship “Maine” in a Cuban harbor was knowingly falsely reported as sabotage, enraging the US public and directly causing the Spanish-American War. This lie was not ordered by the US government; it was part of competition between NYC newspapers for who had the most subscribers. But it was still all about making money!
