My home region in Germany had its own Low German dialect which is almost dead by now. It started dying out after the war with a lot of refugees arriving - coming from the former Eastern territories who spoke different dialects. So people who were born and grew up before the war (like my grandparents) learned and sometimes used it - but I don't feel like I'm missing out not using it, because there is almost no-one left to use it with. This generation already died out. And a language needs to be spoken and used - otherwise it is just some sentimental folklore.

@corinna007 Magdeburg. Though in the city itself the process of people switching to Standard German started much earlier (with exeption of the harbour workers who apparently still used Low German until the 1950's). But in the rural are it was much more common until WW2. Magdeburg lays on the Elbe river and west of the river it would be called "Eastphalian" and east of the river it is a Brandenburg dialect, which in this case is influenced by Dutch settlers. So some words are different to neighbouring Low German dialects but resemble Dutch* words. *) Dutch like in the Netherlands, not like Pennsylvania Dutch.

@corinna007 I remember until the 1990's in weekend edition of the local newspaper there was one page with Low German stories and anecdotes people sent in. Then in the 2000's it were not current texts but from archive. And since 2010 this page doesn't exist anymore. That quite illustrates that the generation who used the language, would read the page or sent in texts is dead by now.
