It's not defense by Israel because Israel has no right to exist on other people's land. This follows from the November 2nd 1917 Balfour Declartation. When you read the one page carefully. It states the conditions by the British Crown under which the refugee jews were allowed to live in Palestine. One of the conditions is “‘that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of existing non-jewish communities in Palestine”. Consistently violated.

Read a non-religious scientific book about history and law if you really want to know something.
