Not only Germany, the whole UN has laughed about Trump's delusions. It wasn't about the dependency on Russian energy sources though. Nobody has expected that Russia doesn't keep it's treaties actually though.

@JoeOvercoat Actually it was a mistake for Germany to be that much reliant on Russian energy imports. But where was the alternative? Germany is somewhat in trouble today to finance the necessary reconstruction of the energy infrastructure to renewables. If there had been a second source of fossile fuels to competitive prices it would have been organized. But there wasn't any. Don't forget Germany wanted to end the burning of all fossile fuels latest in 2040/45 anyway. Now it will happen probably even before 2035.

@AnnieT369 Gernany has paid in Euro. All the time. As was agreed upon in the treaties about Nordstream 1. The US Dollar only was used for treaties regarding the UK. All other nations in the EU have used the Euro. For obvious reasons

@LordRykard9376 In a couple of years there won't be any burning of fossile fuels in the EU anymore. Latest 2045. In Germany the goal has been set from 2035 onwards. The first deliveries of liquified Hydrogen will arrive already in 2025.

Russian natural gas was the cheapest energy source available before Putin has decided to blow-up Nordstream 1. That was a pragmatic fact. Importing fluid gas from any other source was considered much more expensive. It was a fact based decision actually.

The close down was agreed upon years ago under Mrs. Merkel. There aren't problems because of it. The coal plants deliver enough energy to replace the 3% of nuclear in complete electricity production. That the Gas production facilities are out of performance because Russia has blown-up Nordstream 1 is a different story.

@themeanmachine84 This was solved in a matter of 3 month actually - with money. Hungary, Slovakia are still dependent on Russian fossile fuels. That's a greater problem.

@jf2176 The US hasn't forced Germany to ban Russian gas. Trump has tried that unseccessfully though. Russia has stopped deliveries though.

@Bolcjek You do know that the necessary Uranium for the German reactors was produced from Rosatom? There wasn't any other company able to deliver it in a decent amount of time. Germany still has it's coal plants. One of them is near me. It was reactivated in harvest 2022 after the last electricity was produced there in the 1990's. Now it's closed down again, forever presumably, because enough solar and wind electricity, fluid natural gas and "green" hydrogen should be available. For competitive prices.

@Teutathis You're right with LNG naturally. It's not fluid in it's natural state. Nuclear power has had a share of just above 3% of energy production the last years. The amount of wind and solar has risen much more. The problem was and is the end of natural gas. LNG is to expensive, the amount isn't a problem. The problems with the grid and storage are well known for years. Nothing has happened though. The mass production of "Green Hydrogen" has just started now, although it's a VERY old technique. If there's no need there's no development. Coal should have been replaced until 2030. This won't happen now obviously.

@Teutathis It won't work that way eventually. People will mostly produce their needed energy for themselves. Centralized production is necessary, but probably only for production and people living in big cities. Solar panels and small wind turbines do produce enough electricity for most households. Investment in smart grid technologies is probably the most effective way to use the excess electricity, if batteries shouldn't be the solution.

@TrevorDodd-ev1sx We'll see. Germany will be among the first nations to achieve energy autarchy this way. The price is high, but there won't be any dependency on malign foreign powers anymore and good export opportunities of the involved skills.

@Teutathis That's nothing new actually. The excess energy at daytime and wind rich days will be used to fuel batteries in cars for example and to produce hydrogen. Which will be burned to produce electricity in less efficient times. The price to use this energy needs to paid though. Saving energy in the night and save it in batteries for example in your car would be a priority therefore. The grid itself can save a lot of energy too with a small higher voltage. In Germany only the grid of the railway system can save electricity or nearly two hours of Germany's consumption. The electrification of the autobahns will even add to excess production and storage capacities.

@LordRykard9376 LNG was four times more expensive than buying natural gas via pipeline from Russia. Therefore the distribution was organized for all of Western Europe, except Spain/Portugal because of pipeline difficulties. There was absolutely no reason to buy LNG from the US, Qatar etc. The plans for facilities to process LNG in harbours like Wilhelmshaven hadn't been built therefore too. After the start of the war it has been built in record time though.

@AnnieT369 Gazprom Germany was able to buy everything with the Euros. A transfer to Russia wasn't possible though. Naturally the neo-nazis in the Kremlin shouldn't buy weapons etc. from the selling of natural gas.

@Teutathis Spain has imported LNG because of it for decades. There's no pipeline from Morocco Morocco doesn't even have sizeable oil or gas ressources anyway.

@fulconerra3055 Now renewables have a share of over 40% of all electricity production. The time when nuclear had 15% it was in single digits.

@BojanPeric-kq9et Germany has stopped to allow making treaties for deliveries with natural gas from Russia. Therefore Nordstream 2 wasn't opened for business. New treaties for Nordstream 1 hadn't be allowed too. Only the treaties made before the invasion of Ukraine had been allowed to fulfill. Deals with neo-nazis shouldn't been made. That's a valueable lesson from WW2.

@dansmith16 That's actually not true. There wasn't any nuclear fuel for the three remaining reactors available anyway. There's no one available who can build and maintain the reactors in addition. It was clear for nearly 30 years now that it is a dying technology because of the costs and problems with the population.

@dansmith16 Fission i way too expensive. It's actually the most expensive way to produce electricity. There's no reactor worldwide, which wasn't subsidised with lots of taxpayers money. In addition you won't find a place for a nuclear reactor. The local population simply doesn't want any in their neighbourhood.

@MotoClassics Of course. Germany and France had negotiated a truth between Russia and Ukraine there. But Russia never fulfilled their part.

@maxxim2934 Who has told you that lie? Mrs. Merkel just has stated that she hasn't believe that the Minsk accords lead to peace, because Russia won't be satisfied with the outcome. Therefore it was her main Intention to give Ukraine time to restructure their army to make it ready for a possible more massive intervention similar to the Georgia example. An outright war she hasn't expected though.

@maxxim2934 What's your point? You just stated yourself that Russia has violated the agreement from the start. The Russian soldiers in "holiday" have never returned, the artillery hasn't been removed 10km from the frontline, the Ukrainian bureacracy wasn't allowed to return etc.

@andreywerner1635 Germany wasn't even part of it, as you should know. The Minsk agreements been made between Ukraine and Russia. Mrs. Merkel has confirmed though, that Germany hadn't expected that Russia will not keep their part. As it has happened actually.

The artillery wasn't removed 40km from the armistice line, the soldiers in "holiday" hadn't been called back and the Ukrainian administration wasn't allowed to return, so that the people didn't get pensions, healtcare payments. Which point Russia has fulfilled in your opinion actually? Ukraine has fulfilled several points -not all-, which was clearly stated from the OSCE observers at least.

@andreywerner1635 All 53 member nations of the European Council have made perfectly clear that Munich' 38 won't be repeated. That's a given. To achieve peace the fascist occupation force needs to leave Ukraine. That's in the interest of all Europeans.
