The special counsel investigating former President Donald Trump's handling of classified documents has issued a subpoena to the Trump Organization, requesting records, including foreign financial records from seven countries, according to The New York Times. The purpose of the subpoena and the specific timing are not yet clear. However, it suggests that investigators are widening their scope to determine whether Trump violated the law by taking sensitive government materials upon leaving the White House and failing to fully comply with requests for their return.
Special Counsel Jack Smith has been focused on investigating the mishandling of government documents by the former president. Some of the allegedly taken documents contain classified information, including international secrets, as well as details about the sources and methods used to access them.
The Trump Organization has licensing and development agreements for real estate projects in China, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, and Oman. The subpoena also sought records related to Trump's involvement with a Saudi-backed golf venture called LIV Golf, which organizes tournaments at some of his golf clubs.
These latest developments indicate that investigators are looking into Trump's foreign business dealings as part of their inquiry.
