Let me start by saying, I didn’t ‘like’ Trump, per se, because I didn’t know much about him besides his businesses in hotel/real estate industry (pre-internet days) but I ‘admired’ him like I did many people. I did that paper for a business class, as well as I remember another paper being on Michigan, GM and how it destroyed local formerly middle class minority communities when they closed their plants. My admiration o him came as he represented another industry to start paying attention to because before him, I admired movie/tv stars, singers/rappers, athletes. It was the 80s. I read the business stories in Ebony/Jet. So he was different😬. Yes, he was egotistical but many of the above⬆️and plenty of people I went to school with were snooty too. Anyway, I grew up in a financially struggling family of 6/7; 5 kids, mom and dad (oldest sister was raised by an aunt). Both parents worked in what was considered a working-poor household. This was in the 70/80s so church was a major part of our childhood, at least until confirmation😬. But I don’t blame people who grew up with a silver spoon anymore than I can’t be mad at how I grew up. As the youngest girl, 4th of 5, 3 girls, I wore lots of hand-me-downs. I HATED THAT. But I used my childhood experiences as a learning tool as what not to do or to do and drastically improved my quality of life. Thank you for thanking me for my service. Besides most of my dad’s generation being in the National Guard, many people in my generation especially women didn’t go in the military. Only a handful I knew did, I think 4 of my cousins. After going to 3 colleges, in 3 different states, in 3 years, my student loan debt was getting high and I desperately needed to do and finish something. If it wasn’t for one of my cousins who visited us (one of my sisters and I lived together in another state going to college) after his Navy boot camp, I would have never known about the minute details to spark my interest. After that, I enlisted even though EVERYONE including my dad told me not to. (I had a great-uncle who was experimented on during his military days and ended up severely disabled; wheelchair bound, lost his ability to stand, walk, talk, write, everything. At the airport, when I was leaving for boot camp, my dad said, do not volunteer for anything.) What was cool was I was the first in my entire family to retire from the military. Me. Girl power! One of my cousins did have more years in but I retired first. I retired at 20, he did 26. I agree, the treatment of Vietnam vets were atrocious. I couldn’t imagine them having to have to go over there to be disrespected on foreign land to come back and get disrespected at home too. One of my sister’s dad actually got blown up in a tank in Vietnam. He survived it. My best friend of 36 years is Vietnamese. She was one of the lucky ones because her dad went back for them. Her dad had also told me not to go in the military and he was so proud and surprised when I retired. As a veteran, I learned there are two types of people; one who appreciates veterans and some who don’t regardless that we fought for their freedom. Today, it’s even more crazier with so many groups hating veterans, police and basically all people of authority. I don’t hold that against people because miserable people exists everywhere. I experienced people in the military that disliked me because of my sex and race. My motto then was, you don’t have to like who I am or what I look like, but you will respect me. I normally equate my military experience as ‘I survived.’ I don’t hold Trump lack of military service against him because as someone who commissioned the USS George H W Bush CVN77, 41’s aircraft carrier, I realized he was the last president that served. I learned later Bush Jr served too. But 42, 44 and now Biden didn’t serve either and I really don’t think we will ever get another President that was a veteran again especially if this country keeps money in politics. I enjoyed our interaction.
