USSR bankrupted itself by engaging in a symmetrical arms race with USA which not only controlled more markets and resources but also managed to use China to help by forging a symbiotic relationship. Also IT revolution helped the US. However price for the US was very high, besides the same struggle continues but with China on the Russian side this time. Controlling such a vast and diverse empire is a challenge even for the US. For me, the key moment in the Cold War was the Sino-Soviet Split.
