25 mm got a bit too much flak (pun intended). US did lose quite a few planes attacking the Japanese fleet. Take the battle of the Philippine Sea. Both sides lost about 25 planes to the opposing side fleet's flak. Also, it is notable that most of the Japanese plane losses in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Island was not ascribed by the witnessing USN officers to the vaunted 40 mm Bofors but to the 20 mm Oerlikons which is closer to the 25 mm. Now I know the analysis could be wrong in the heat of battle and also the primary role of the shipborne AAA is to prevent damage by aerial attack to the fleet rather than shoot down planes, but still I think the pounding the IJN took in the second half of WW2 was more due to the sheer number of US planes than shortcomings of the 25 mm AA gun.
