In WW2 perhaps the most succsessful application of the anti-torpedo nets was on the old Italian armored cruiser San Giorgio at Tobruk. Those stopped something like 39 British torpedoes.

Regarding the German WW1 ships scuttled at Scapa Flow - their value comes from the fact they were built and sunk before the nuclear age - so their steel contains low levels of background radiation and hence is valuable for various instruments including geiger counters. But a specialized equipment to properly extract it is needed. Blucher and Tirpiz are harvested for low background steel and for the same reason the ABDA casualties of the 1942. Battle of Java Sea were stolen. That being said, buyers should be aware of scams - in US a 19th and early 20th century scammer sold such landmarks as the Lincoln Memorial or the Brooklyn Bridge several times over.

The best WW2 fighting USN admiral was Raymond Spruance. His biggest mistake was the dusk strike at the Phillipine Sea which cost him 80 planes and 25 aircrew (to Ozawa's credit too) but still they sank a carrier for their troubles.

👍 for the Black Sea

Of course. That was the point. THAT being the WORST thing he did is an argument for him being the best. War record? Midway, Truk Raid, Phillipine Sea. All victories, at least two of them decisive with few losses. He even gave his battleships some action at Truk to maintain morale and reduce danger to aircrews.

The Kongos vs the Revenges - Kongos had one more way they could use their speed to their advantage: being faster than the Revenges, in open water they could approach from the side which would give them light or breeze advantage - as the Hipper's Germans had at Jutland (although not by design in their case) - degrading the efficiency of Revenges' rangefinders. And escape if it became too hot.

The guy was a CIA propagandist. Which means if an ally needs a bit of flattery to do some dirty work for the US, the likes of him are the go-to guys. Napoleon understood that. That's why he told every foreign cannon fodder in his army (like Poles or Croats) that they are the best soldiers in the world when he was vising each of them separately.

1:40 see the Tanker War during the Iran-Iraq war for the best reference. Bottom line - since USN is stronger than all other navies combined - whatever US wants goes. See the illegal impounding of the tanker in Gibraltar a few days ago for further confirmation.

Still bad things can happen even to your battleship while in harbor if the enemy is mad brave: Check the burning of a Turkish ship of the line at Chios during the Greek War of Independence by a few dudes and a small fireship: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Constantine_Kanaris#/media/File%3ALytras-nikiforos-pyrpolisi-tourkikis-navarhidas-apo-kanari.jpeg Or the Alexandria raid of 1942. Or sinking of the USS Card (last aircraft carrier sunk in battle, although it was serving as an aircraft transport at the time).
