@bkjeong4302 IJN carrier aircraft (particularly those from Kaga, Ryujo and Hosho) had already sank much of the Chinese navy (consisting mostly of light and protected cruisers of limited combat capability) near Shanghai and Canton (Guangdzhou today) in 1937. I mostly agree with you, cruisers and destroyers were good for shore bombardments too, the only advantage of battleships was shell weight and range, though cheap monitors would fare just as well, but battleships were off-the-shelf so they were used.

Man, I am sick and tired of all the wankings on Bismarck which was essentialy a waste of resources used stupidly. Why not make specials about little known naval battles that were part of major changes of frontlines like naval combat in the First and Second Sino Japanese War, Russo-Japanese war (kudos for the voyage of the damned episode, albeit it's tone is a bit too anti-Russian) before the Tsushima, Pacific War (Chile vs Peru), riverine and naval combat during the Chinese Revolution, Balkan Wars or river monitor combat in WW1 (Austro-Hungarian ships vs Allied shore defences is Serbia and later in Romania including Romanian monitors?)

@bkjeong4302 They had some value at shore bombardments while you had the air superiority. But there is one thing unique with Bismarck - the absolutely stupendous amount of re-telling the one and the same story, (almost as much as the goddamn religious books) just because she was one of the very few battleships that kinda had life and death the way the prewar theorists envisioned for all battleships (albeit very short) - hurling heavy shells at enemy battleships, actually sinking one and then being sunk by enemy battleships (insert Swordfish torpedo hit into the rudder in between).
