Defending a salient has some advantages. You hold the interior lines of communication and can rapidly redeploy to counter any single thrust by the attacker. As long as you can prevent encirclement, the enemy needs far more troops to defeat you then you need to defend the salient. Of course, the bad thing is you are exposed to artillery fire from 3 sides, and your redeployment advantage can be reduced or nullified by airstrikes, or artillety - if the enemy can do proper, live updates reconnaissance in all weathers. Ukrainians, for all their bravery and skill are the underdog with fewer options.

Doesn't matter why. It is the result that counts. We in Serbia console ourselves that the Yugoslav army prevented any ground invasion of Kosovo during the 1999 war with NATO and the Albanian KLA terrorists (there were some sizeable efforts to capture part of it by KLA, but, other than capturing a few indefensible positions they failed). However the simple truth is NATO forced Yugoslavia to withdraw its forces as a precursor to ending the aerial bombardment of the country in which NATO had an overwhelming advantage. It was taking a heavy toll on the infrastructure vital to sustain a country and would have utterly wrecked it had the campaign continued.
