When the Yugoslav war started all parties ran warmongering propaganda trying to distance themselves from the others, emphasizing differences in language, religion, owerblowing negative stereotypes about opponents etc. One thing they did is to glorify their lost cause nationalist losers from WW2 -like the royalist Chetniks in Serbia or Nazi Ustasha in Croatia to gather as much cannon fodder for the front. The funny thing was that the people who ordered such propaganda all came from the communist elite (even if some used to be somewhat dissident because of their nationalist views). One could wonder if they liked the idea of sending the people who got hot on ideologies that they had opposed for so long to the front to die, but more realistic apprisal would be that they needed a nationalist ideology which was familiar, yet diametrically opposite of the now unpopular commmunism.
