It seems to be made mainly of stamped parts, and the ohters has very simple machining. Probably it was more apt to be mass produced in respect to the other breechlocked designs of its era. It makes sense if the plan was to provide handguns to all the soldiers of the army, and probably someone thought of it, since pistols proved to be more useful than bolt action rifles in trench fight (like almost anything really). However shotguns and SMGs proved to be better than pistols, so...

Judging from the level of machining required to make a Thompson, while this is made of stamped parts. A SMG made starting from this gun would probably have had a lot of advantages in production.

It's the ejector. At 2:41 you can see the part into the action. It's a cool design, very simple (like the rest of the gun) and easy to replace.
