It's easy to design a SMG that fires more than 1000 RPM (Already the first one, the WWI Villar Perosa, did). It's actually more difficult to keep low the ROF. 500-550 RPM were considered the optimal compromise between ammo consumption, barrel heating, controllability and effectiveness of the burst.

At 500m a FMJ 9mm Luger projectile can still pass completely through a human body, even more a "9mm M38" cartridge (the super hot 9mm cartridge developed for this SMG) that, at 732 Joule (124grains, 428m/s) power wise was in 357 SIG territory. It's true that it's more difficult to aim a 9mm carbine in respect to a full size rifle due to the more arched trajectory and shorter sight radius, but this SMG can fire in full auto remaining stable, so the possibilities to hit and kill, or even better seriously wound, an enemy with a short bursts were not that low.

Yeah. It seems you can recollect all of them holding a glass.

almost any first generation SMG had the same problem.
2
They should have used Hollywood engineering.

The 9mm M38 cartridge was a sort of super +P+ 124 grains, 428m/s 732Joules of energy at the muzzle.

Yeah. It can fire bot the 9mm Luger and 9mm Glisenti, but for it was specifically developed and commonly used the "9mm M38" cartridge, that's a sort of super +P+ (124gr, 428m/s at the muzzle, so 732J of energy, that's in 357 SIG territory).

It's more an evolution of the MAB 18/30.

More a professionally fine tuned one.

It's classified as a "sport weapon", so it can have a magazine up to 29 rounds, but you can't hunt with it (who would anyway?)
1
it can, and did, fire stansdard 9mm luger cartridges, but it was adopted along the "M38" cartridge, that's a very hot load, a sort of super +P+

@ShutUpBubi And it's lighter, has better ergonomy, and far better double-stack double-feed magazines. ;)

Almost all the SMGs of the time had the same problem.
1
Yeah. The 9M38 was a very hot Luger +P+,
