It's a mispell. Those kind of towers were inspired by the Genoese-built (but French-held at that point) fort at Punta Mortelle in Corsica that, in 1794, repelled the attack of two British warships sporting 100 guns in total. The Brits were so impressed by the efficiency shown by the small construction that copied it, building hundreds of samples around their empire, but couldn't spell the name right, so naming them "martello towers".

@andrewp8284 "mortella" is actually a gergal name of the myrtle in Italian, so "punta delle mortelle", where the original fort was located is "myrtle point".
