  1. Beretta adapted the M2 semiauto-auto switch to full size M1 rifle receiver and used it on the BM59. There was no need to reinvent the wheel.

  2. The .30 carbine is really in a gray zone. Both fired from a 18" barrel (the lenght of the M1 carbine) it's less powerful than a 10mm Auto, or a .357 Magnum, that are pistol cartridges.

Also the M2 has half the weight than the STG44. As a soldier that had to carry his weapon, I would have probably preferred the M2 over the STG44 or the Tommy gun.
