@LunaDevaKitty In WWI they used it, since the LMGs and HMGs the French gave them were in 8mm Lebel. They used .303 British too, since the rifles the US troops used the most in WWI were British-provided Lee-Enfields.

They used it in 8mm Lebel, like thy used the Chauchat in 8mm Lebel.

@LunaDevaKitty It's actually historical. Only few samples of Chauchat in 30-06 had been made, and they had been used for training only (they were found to be quite unrelaible due to incorrect measures of the cartridge had been provided). In combat the US troops used the Chauchat only in 8mm Lebel.

When mounted on vehicles or aircrafts, an articulated metal belt was used. https://66.media.tumblr.com/e032707f816bf00b0afb09c239210c55/tumblr_ozu1ztqzDC1tevf1do1_640.jpg

It's actually pretty important, when designing a gun for accuracy, to leave the barrel free to float, without other parts of the weapon touching it (part for the rear, where it's attached to the receiver), so to not damage the harmonics of the movement.
