Unfortunately, it's completely useless without a bipod (it's made to suspend the rifle between the bipod and the shoulder, without tiring the arm).

A select fire rifle in 30-06, or anything close, was a nonsense. Designers started to design intermediate cartridges since the moment the idea of the automatic portable fire in the weight of a rifle arose. Starting with the Ribeyrolles 1918. Because they KNEW full power cartridge automatic fire in the weight of a rifle was a nonsense.

And it was not really needed. The BM59 saves the M1 Garand trigger group by adapting to it the M2 Carbine selector.

M14. "A rifle that can't even stand up on a wooden block."

Everyone knows the FAL and G3 are not controllable in full auto ("inch" FAL don't even have full auto) even if they are a little bit more controllable than the M14 (thanks to the inline stock) but they are easier to manufacture, and the G3 works even in very poor conditions. Also, many of their iterations have at least a bipod. That makes full auto an option. What everyone wanted to have in Korea was a M2 Carbine. A hint that the Ordnance Corp didn't take.

The external semi-auto switch is not necessary to continue using the M1 trigger group, as the BM59 demonstrated (and the BM59 simply adapted to the M1 Garand the switch of the M2 Carbine).
