You beauties, great to see carrier aviation back with the RN!
12
Not a copy, the NLAW doesnt share the same top attack vector its a flatter trajectory.

I was 9 years old in 1980 it was incredible watching, glued to our shitty black and white TV you had to put 50p into. Then two years later the Falklands war, decided I was going Royal Navy , 22 years in I had no regrets. Saw plenty of SF types in my time, fantastic professionals and not to be messed about with. I hope we never dilute the force and keep them "elite", we`d be fucked without them to be honest.
6
Its the best name for any Boat, ever!
6
Mostly, sold off by the Tory Party as they hollowed out our once mighty RAF.
4
@wasp6594 It is correct, even more, Russian defence planners were so surprised by the effectiveness of British forces in the South Atlantic they had to revise their plans against the BAOR in Germany.
4
Me too, we have more subs laid up awaiting decommissioning than we have active.
4
@Light_Painter :P haha!
4
@handsoffmygunmf6750 No, it still doesnt mean they "copied" the missile, thats like saying a Renault, Ford and a Fiat are copies of each other just because they share the same engine. Lots of western equipment share the very same seekers and they are all different weapons. NLAW is ideal because it is 100% effective against 90% of the vehicles the Russians are using. Javelin is more effective against the very latest MBTs but there are far fewer of those vehicles compared to other hardware like BMPs so it makes perfect sense to have many more NLAW than Javelin.
4
@moose4488 Russia has just 12 Su-57s - take a seat.
4
@oliversparks1459 he’s right, the U.K. cannot crew more ships, young people don’t want to be away from home all of the time these days. It’s a real issue for the RN.
3
I cant believe how little the UK SF get paid, no wonder some are buggering off but would any of them change what they have personally achieved? Has to be about more than the dosh.
3
@sticks5614 I think the BAOR would have done a good job. After the Falklands war it has emerged the Russians had to reappraise their forces facing the British sectors.
3
the Peace dividend.
3
@guts-141 it’s 5 enemy aircraft they don’t all have to be fighters. At least not in most air forces. Dave Moggy Morgan just missed out on his ace status in the Falklands War when he suffered a HUD failure at this wrong moment. His other kills included a Helicopter as well as Skyhawks.
3
@Sandhill1988 how do they deal with optically guided missiles as wild weasels?
3
I’m not sure about Vietnam?
3
Andrew you are misinformed.
3
Alex Doroshenk Simple solution, dont steal other peoples countries.
3
@glamdring0007 Not really, the anti ATGM systems the Russians have installed, even the next gen versions after Shtora etc cant handle top attack javelins they come in above their kill zones and their ECCM is able to overcome EO dazzlers. Take a look at some of the contraptions the Russians have put on some of their T90s to try to counter them, they resemble steel umbrellas. Different story for NLAW I will grant.
3
Read some interesting news on Patriot today in The Economist, their defense guy got access to a UKR Patriot operator who was cleared to talk, that person stated Kinzhal only made one third of the velocity claimed by Russia, so around 3.5 Mach terminal. Ukraine has captured Kinzhal on their radars and has done for a year, so that data most likely found its way Stateside for somebody to crunch the numbers and decided PAC-3 had a capability against it. It makes sense why they made the choice to send the system. If they did not think it was possible they might not have sent the system.
3
Not over Ukraine they don’t. And if you remember what happened to those 5 Russian aircraft that were splashed across the border in Belgorod I doubt they are flying too close to the border these days.
3
@Vlog-hu8gb it’s actually quite the opposite. NATO has many more times the number of fighting aged men than Russia.
3
Great production FTV. Would like to see what life is like on base.
3
@bulletproofguy5112 The RAF have a pilot shortage it takes years to train fast jet pilots.
2
And now a 2 grand Ops bonus, whoop de feckin do. If the lads did it for money there would be nobody in the armed forces! Need to have gone to uni and orifice training for the big bucks.
2
Mercs say thanks for their paychecks :P
2
Imagine if we had built units 7&8 of the D class… When Diamond is relieved to replenish her VLS, we done have another T-45 available to fill in - that’s why we have sent 2 T-23s with Sea Ceptor - a great weapon but much less capable than Aster, however good enough against subsonic cruise missiles and drones which are the primary threats. Luckily the Houthi ballistic missiles have shown zero capability to strike moving targets at sea.
2
Actually the solid fuel motors aren’t the real issue. Tests have shown that its range that is affected when they are used past their use by dates - depending on grain composition and type. And that’s found to be very little. On average 10%. Cracking doesn’t lead to erratic motor performance, it turns out. However there are other components that are more problematic.
2
@gmolina0614 Most muslims can spell losing, perhaps they can teach you English.
2
You had to edit that? :P
2
Every new RAF fast jet pilot wants to fly wants to fly the F-35.
2
Everything dies and something new is born to replace it.
2
Pmsl glad I am not the only one thinking that, bets on a nick name?
2
"If that was the case the RN could of saved a fortune and stayed with invincible class size". Nope, the cost model showed that two large carriers were more cost effective than 3 smaller CVS type hulls with 3 composite airgroups.
2
All of those sensors look vulnerable to me, apart from the optical sight.
2
Land Ceptor looks much less of a pain in the arse than Rapier.
2
You do realise its conservative governments who cut the Mil to the bone right?
2
@lmao.3661 then you really dont understand the difference between communism and socialism. As for the idiots calling Corbyn a Marxist, i have nothing but contempt for that level of political ignorance.
2
How terribly self entitled of you.
2
Listen to Stank, the drag is a requirement if you want air to enter the lift fan.
2
Corbyn scuppered additional T45 numbers? I think you will find the Navy made a choice in the 1990s, more escorts or two QEs.
2
@mnds1476 I know you are not, many of Putin`s sycophants couldnt find Moscow on a map.
2
@mnds1476 The rust bucket Carrier Kusnetsov in your favourite Navy lost 2 jets in 8 weeks during its Syria deployment, which it had to cut short. One ran out of fuel because they dithered on an alternate..... Its refit floating dock also sank in a few feet of water with a crane crashing through its flight deck, so people in glass houses should not throw stones.
2
@mnds1476 I can read, that is all I required.
2
@mnds1476 No, thats not what you said, stop back peddling.
2
ISIS dont have an airforce.
2
@krashd Those names have a proud history in our Navy.
2
@Варвара-д9ч3т The EO system has to be looking in the right place to do that.
2
@handsoffmygunmf6750 well, when you look at the top attack modes for both systems, the flight paths are very different. NLAW uses an overfly top attack mode where it flies 1 metre above line of sight (OTA) - which is very different to the Javelin top attack mode which sees the missile pitch up high into the air and make a steep dive from altitude to attack the top of a tank. This mode negates most hard kill anti ATGM systems the Russians use if not all of them since those systems can’t “look up” or fire their shots upwards either. You can see the Russians are trying to counter Javelin with some of the weird looking umbrella type devices they have on some tanks - designed to initiate the Javelin fuses before it hits their ERA. Except the fuses are in the back end. Lastly, NLAW has one single charge, Javelin has a tandem warhead.
