  2. They thought it was something else, a threat and they got it wrong, this has happened throughout history. I remember when we lost an RAF Tornado to an American Patriot battery during the last Iraq war. The operator ignored what their system was telling them but they fired anyway.

  8.  @frederickbarbarossa8340  The Iranians are saying they had comms issues with the battery so a disruption in C3 is always a bad deal. They likely had just a few seconds to make a decison on their own. With the Vincennes, they had calibration issues with their gear. Radars not tuned correctly are an issue in every Navy it is down to operator training.

  9.  @adrianalexandru7650  Under benign conditions yes, but It is not only size its RCS and contact aspect to emitter, then factor in clutter /filtering/rejection etc etc. It is not always simple.

  15.  @potatopoweredhamster9897  That Iranian flight was on a course used by lots of other airliners. The Vincennes crew fucked up , didnt help that Slick -32 wasnt calibrated correctly.

  18. Iraq told the US in advance of the Iranian missile strike, that is widely known now, the Iranians told the Iraqis. This is entirely consistent with with iranian strategy, the attack was in Iraq but I think it was luck nobody died, the base was not empty by the way, but there were definetely some diispersal of forces away from the base. A US helicopter was damaged, two I think.
