  7. Comparing fentanyl and cocaine in terms of man-hours/dose was the highlight of the video for me. Second was the supply chain for each drug. Particularly that cocaine has a very linear process to go from organic material to drugs on the street, whereas as fentanyl is very fractured and desperate because it’s a synthetic and can be produced by a large number of people. This type of information is why I stick with Peter, despite his tendencies to wander off into areas which aren’t his strong suit.

I’m engineer that’s worked in the energy sector for decades (conventional & renewables) and he was correct on everything he said in this segment, which gives me confidence that he’s correct on most subjects where I have little, to no, knowledge. I’m amazed at the breadth of subjects he can cover off the top of his head. It’s not like he’s making a prepared speech that he reads off a tele-prompter. Most of the time, he’s hiking at elevation and apparently just stops and delivers a very crisp and interesting chat about something going on somewhere in the world.

Peter’s strength is the long term impact associated with decade long trends, particular demographics which leads to solid insights on trade, geopolitical strength and weaknesses, strategic alliances,etc. But for near term events, he’s not very strong.   12. As a German American, I wish I could agree with you, however, Germany has entered a phase of terminal demographic decline, which is going to be very hard to reverse. This is not immediate and frankly not related to new term policy, but this is a kin to trying to stop a glacier during an Ice Age.

Tesla sells about 50,000 cars per month, while Stellantis, Ford and GM sell about 120,000, 177,000 and 215,000 cars per month, respectively, in 2022. I used to work for Tesla and they’re a great company, but they are a niche manufacturer are nowhere near the big 3 in volume. Also if you’re one of those dreamers that think the US will have a 100% electrified fleet in the next 20 years, you’re going to be very disappointed. The US will not have over 25% EVs over the next 40 years. Its not a function of the EV product, but rather that the infrastructure and raw materials don’t and won’t exist to get there. The future of the US car industry is in ICE/EV hybrids, not EVs. Sorry to burst your bubble, but the data an math takes precedents over ideology.

  16. This is worrying to me. I’m a Yank that is close to retirement and was VP in a large US company. I dealt regularly with Siemens and other large German firms. The Germans were always a bit autocratic and not the easiest to deal with, however they were (are) smart, organized, precise and produced consistent high quality goods. We couldn’t have sourced the goods we needed at the quality we required from the US firm if we had to. If Germany is waning, its bad news for everyone. I hope they can right the ship. I also gotta say the Germans I worked with were tough during business hours, but absolutely lovely after hours and generally on a personal front.

  20. to be honest I worked in the defense industry in the 80s and 90s and within that environment everyone new the USSR and later the Russian weapon systems were decades behind those of the US. Given Russia’s general aimless meandering and poor economic environment over the last 25 -30 years, my assumption is that they lost additional ground on the front since that time

  21. Great story. It’s always nice to hear how things unfolded and decisions were made from someone that was actually there. When I graduated from Texas A&M with a EE degree in the late 80s there were so many jobs available from Frito Lay. I was shocked at how many EE jobs they had. We were used to postings from Motorola, IBM, NASA, Boeing, Toyota, etc and other as the traditional EE employers. Thanks for sharing your story.

On the extreme edge of this spectrum, those with ‘tik-tok’ brain can’t stay focused on a five minute conversation without getting fidgety, restless, and nervous. Californians have voted for decades to prevent forest management, invest almost nothing in new reservoirs and use the water they have to protect the Delta Smelt. So while the federal government might be a joke, California has got what they voted for, which is sad but was very predictable.

  25.  @robertshelton3796 I can’t speak to Ukraine, other that what I read before the war (since the war, its all propaganda), but I did live in Asia for 15 years and spent a lot of time in Taiwan. The Taiwanese are very smart, dedicated and kind people. In my experience they are very different than mainland Chinese in their attitude, outlook, mannerisms and appreciation of the West. I personally would be very sad for the people of Taiwan if they were invaded.

  36. The US should have been charging a seaway fee to the insurance companies that insure these vessels and use that money to fund a portion of its Navy. Instead the US taxpayers have footed the bill for the worlds protection of the sea lanes for nearly 80 years. Yes, the US citizens received some value for this effort, but the rest of the world received most of it.

  43. As an engineer that used to work for a very larger EV company (hint, hint) I completely agree and that’s only the beginning of the issues. EVs are cool and fun for the wealthy, urban niche buyer, but they are not green when considering the total energy input over the life and disposal of the vehicle. Also EVs will not surpass 20% of total vehicles in the US for at least five decades an it may take longer. My money is on hybrids becoming the primary vehicle power source and from what I see Toyota is the one that will lead in this area, and no I don’t work for Toyota.

I’m an engineer with an undergraduate and a graduate degree, and while I think STEM degrees are the best route for those who can and want to proceed in this direction, outside of that, the trades are far superior to any other university degrees. Also, I work with AI and there is no doubt AI is going to take a chunk out of white collar jobs, including STEM jobs, but AI can’t touch anything where you need to be on sight and use your hands. Electricians, plumbings, mechanics, and other such trades are going to be a great place to be moving forward.

  50. As an engineer in the solar industry I can guarantee your panel efficiency has dropped at least 20% and probably closer to 30% over that 12 year period. You might not notice the degradation, particularly if your system was designed to produce more electricity than you use or your usage has dropped over time, but the panel efficiency has definitely dropped.
