  1. Half a century ago I worked summers / weekends on a golf course grounds crew when in college. The fairway mower had a 2 part drive shaft needing service & the boss sent me in his truck to the dealer with it. They said it was not a servicable item and the only fix was to order a complete replacement assembly, shafts, splines and all. Big big money. All it needed was new u-joints but that fell on deaf ears. Stopped at NAPA on the way back. The counterman measured them and sent me on my way with 3 new ones for not much money. Installed them myself, the boss was amazed. As a young man driving old rusty cars in upstate New York a U-joint replacement was simple survival.
