  2. You could enchant them, most wizards just don't keep up much with modern technology. Its the mindset that old magic is strongest, thus new technology isn't important. Killing is so taboo for wizards that there seems little point in cruder means. There's much worse spells than the death curse, the half blood prince essentially invents a lightsaber. The death curse isn't really curable or preventable it disintegrates the soul. Its almost a tradition to choose it, a swear, a murder. In reality you can animate a statue of a space marine and have it shoot the place up if you want death and carnage.
