Well, the ideal of colorblindness certainly is not a negative one -- so long as it doesn’t serve to obscure the disadvantages of discrimination and poverty, that is. Those of us who are in positions of privilege must work to change the system. Indeed, a society is to be judged largely on how it treats its most vulnerable and disenfranchised citizens.

The distinction being made is not actually centered around ethnicity, but rather discusses privileged vs underprivileged. The dynamics of discrimination are well understood by the social sciences. Colored people are on average are less privileged than whites are, and women are on average less privileged than men are. That makes minority/colored women the most vulnerable members of society. Progressive policy will logically reflect that, as it seeks to uplift the disadvantaged.

It's a little disturbing how even TED seminars tend to chronically underrepresent minority women. Basic progressive policy is to prioritize the underprivileged, yet the very women in society who suffer the most from the pressures of the religious right and who lack social mobility most often are, time and again, being sidelined in favor of upper class Western white females. It's both tragic and worrying considering the subject of this video. :-(
