Thank you for explaining the difference between the US and Russian law. This is important.

My family left when Stalin came to power and I remember hearing stories about what a nightmare is was when I was a child. They left with nothing and managed to make a good life in the US. Like you, they helped other refugees who came after them and I respect you for being willing to help. Hope you get through this alright no matter how it plays out.

Any thinking person understands that polls in Russia are unreliable and street interviews are not representative. But the interviews still have value if you understand their limitations. You get some insight into what its like to live under tyranny, to be unable to express yourself freely. 1420 is a courageous team of content producers and I respect and admire what they do.

I don't know how Russian YouTubers manage to hold back on what they really think. I've watched several of them recently and it's hard to watch them struggle to be so careful. I'm so used to saying what I want I'm sure I would slip up and get busted if I was there.

The people who post on social media are not a representative sample of the population Roman, they're just the loudest. Most people everywhere are indifferent, focused on their own lives. You should know by now there are 10s of thousands of us that get what you're going through and hoping you'll find a way out of your tough situation. Wishing you the best of luck π

I thought exactly the same thing. But I doubt anyone will fall for it.

Compensation for all having to put up with Putin's bots in the comments. Thanks!

I would put Estonians in the top tier just for their sense of humor. Been laughing so much at the video and the comments. This was a good one.

It's hard to imagine what it's like to be so powerless. I think many of us with freedom of speech, the right of assembly, and all those "first amendment" rights struggle to understand how people living in a police state can tolerate being deprived of those rights. I hope you will be ok and I admire you for the risk you are taking to speak honestly.
55
So true. There is a saying "eternal vigilance is the price of freedom" that applies everywhere.

Β @werdormenΒ π made me laugh out loud
35
My mother lived in Alma Ata in soviet times. She gave me the impression it was just another Russian city. Had no idea it was in Kazakhstan until recently. I guess one result of this war is a lot of us are getting a crash course about the Russian world.
35
I have to admit I'm still frustrated with the response of Russians to what is happening but this video explains a lot. I can imagine what it might be like if my own country changed for the worse and I couldn't stop it. I appreciate your honest observations.
19
Thanks! I'm always surprised at how well you understand American culture for someone who didn't grow up there
18
Sometimes I think I'm out of touch with the US and I still live there. The culture has changed a lot in the last 3 or 4 years.
17
@grizellda2540Β the supreme court effectively made the president a king. Exactly what the founding fathers did not want!
13
That was an interesting conversation. Would love to see a collaboration with Natasha and/or 1420. Depressed Russian is an interesting new Russian vlogger too. If any viewer knows of new Russian vloggers I would like to know.
9
Thanks! This was a necessary video. Glad you took on this subject π π
8
Are you deleting all comments that are not positive? Of course I'm glad your life is going well but I've noticed all controversial comments have disappeared.
5
Good one π Thanks!

We have an expression "stuck between a rock and a hard place" meaning you have no good choices. I wish your critics understood that. I think you're making the best of a very bad situation. Good luck friend, hope you find a way out of this mess.
5
My worldview has changed over time. Yours is evolving too. Part of the reason i watch your videos is to see you react and change as events have an impact on you.
4
It's everywhere, been that way for two thousand years.

The free world needs to find a way to identify authentic asylum seekers and provide sanctuary for them. We can't keep treating all Russians the same way. People who are clearly at risk like Roman should be allowed passage out of the Russian sphere of influence.
4
I saw that. Can confirm this is a fact
4
Almost embarrassed for how entitled we are. Affluent nomad? Oxymoron?. Serious cringe π¬

Dissidents were welcomed to the West during the cold war. Sadly we have become xenophobic since then. America and most EU nations started closing their doors for some reason. America forgot they are a nation of immigrants, they forgot a long tradition of welcoming refugees and asylum seekers. I'm sorry the West isn't more open to people escaping tyranny for a better life in a free country. It shouldn't be that way.
4
Thanks! I take this as a wake-up call for us in the West. It could happen anywhere. "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance"
4
She will have to become a nun and live out her life in a convent.
4
I definitely support Ukraine but I also disagree with Zelensky on Russians leaving Russia. Dissidents escaping Russia were welcomed by the free world during the cold war so why not now? Seems odd that YouTube would care that much about opinions on this subject.
3
Just great. Two superpowers with seriously flawed leadership. This will not end well.

It's like a cult
3
So true

Do you think Russians would prefer the EU if it was easier to get a visa? There are 2 other Russian vloggers I follow that are in Georgia now. It would be interesting to see a vlog about what influences the choice of destinations Russians choose when they decide to get out of town.
3
Exactly π―
3
@caleymckibbin2304Β so you think American law restricts free speech as much as Russian law? I don't think so.

Sadly reminds me of the MAGA crowd.
3
Just an FYI Roman: we don't really use the term "commie" anymore. That word was used during the McCarthy Era when innocent people were accused of being communist agents and were shunned and lost their jobs. It was not one of our finest moments π
3
Thanks! One of your best π
3
But it's common knowledge that the elections are rigged. Maybe it's important to make a symbolic effort.
3
The far left and far right are easily influenced by Russian propaganda.
3
I don't know if non-Americans understand how extreme the situation is. I've been voting since the 70s and I've never seen so much hostility between the parties. And if you try to be neutral both sides will condemn you. Not good, not good at all π³
3
So random, born in the wrong place at the wrong time. I don't know what I would do in your place. Definitely get out of Russia's sphere of influence - even Georgia doesn't seem safe to me.
2
Thanks! Always appreciate your honesty.
2
The "digital nomad" was hilarious π affluent nomads? Oxymoron? Absolute cringe π¬
2
3rd attempt after deleted twice: You rejected Putin's tyranny. That's good enough.
2
All of the Russian YouTubers I follow are getting bolder, very slowly, but it's definitely happening. I take it as a good sign Putin may be losing his grip.
2
"child beating Russian patriarch" π made me laugh.
