  1. The utility of math is rarely explained in school. I would have been a lot more eager to learn if real-life applications had been mentioned. Not problems made up by authors, but solutions used by real people. Monetary rewards don't solve the depressing sense of futility. If you explained how computer games use plenty of math, you'd already have many boys on board.

  2. +Cas Van Veen , +Jason Martin I'm not saying this is a bad idea if it works, and your own experiences of learning math may certainly vary. For me however, the persistent sense of not being able to relate the activity to something tangible was highly demotivating. School always gave me the impression that I would be rewarded for shutting up and playing along (in a pointless exercise). When I discovered computer graphics in my 20's, a whole new world (and appreciation) for math opened up, and I suddenly wished I had build a better foundation when I was younger; I just didn't know!
