They're not mere deists; they think there's an active agent observing and guiding their life, which made them in his image, i.e. is male and humanoid in appearance and shares characteristic human motivations. The irony that they made god in their image is lost on them. I doubt god would offer them much comfort if it was some supernatural freak machine much unlike them. It is the benevolent father looking down.
