@CmdrTobs When the problems that society deals with are cartoonishly gigantic in nature, the way they are now, the only way to fix them is to take cartoonishly gigantic hammer and smash that cartoonishly gigantic problem. You won't get anywhere with any half-measures, you have to do basically firing squads, and the government needs to be on the receiving end, figuratively speaking (maybe figuratively speaking.)

@CmdrTobs The money that the banks are 'swimming in' is freaking counterfeit. It's not real money, it's printed fiat that has no productive output behind it, no savings of any kind, no value. It's 0 value currency. It was 0 value since 1971, but it's more obvious every day now. The banks are 'swimming' in so called credit, which isnt's such a thing. That credit is what the Fed gives away at the discount - credit in worthless fiat, that is immediately sent to US gov't via T-bill purchases.

@CmdrTobs Do you understand the concepts that are in the Constitution at all? Starting with property rights and ending with what's money and what is the document in the first place - a law, that governs the government. But of-course, they brain washed you to believe that Constitution needs interpretation. The private citizen has criminal laws apply to him, so you murder somebody, they don't do an interpretative dance around the law. But gov't hates the law above it, so they 'interpret' it.

@EternalRecursion No, those regulatory bodies are not meaningless. They are themselves part of the cause of the problem, as the regulations are there to make sure that there is no competition. Anything that gov't says is there to protect you from something, is in reality there to protect one larger business from another starting business, to make sure that monopolies stay, that prices go up, that you have no choice, thag gov't gets its cut of money and power. The fix? Get gov't out of it.

@EternalRecursion Because it can't be that people who actually go through the trouble of starting their own business, trying to get a product into the market, navigating among the thousands of gov't regulations, fighting off the taxes, making hiring or non-hiring decisions, trying to balance their books by the end of the day can be this blind to the reality, that the politicians are not there to help anybody except themselves.

@CmdrTobs So by protecting the banks from having to be responsible with the deposits, gov't created the situation that those banks didn't have to be responsible, thus the insane fractional reserve, which is way above the fractional reserve that would have existed under the free market. It's because free market forces people to think about risk. All gov't all around the world is about trying to convince you that they can remove risk from every aspect of your life. That's a nonsense idea.

@bigvirgotube Value is amount of work that is required to get the savings. Somebody has to mine that gold, they have to spend time working, it's not an easy task, unlike what politicians do when they just need more fiat for their spending - push a button, add some zeros to the account. They don't even have to print the fiat anymore. Gold has thousands of years of human history giving it value, that's something I am willing to accept as money rather than any fiat currency on this planet.

@jk147a Do you know how USA 'solved' the Great Depression? It was solved not by anything that gov't did, but by something that gov't stopped doing. Past WWII, US gov't stopped spending, and this finally allowed the credit to flow to the private businesses, who started producing cheap, good quality consumer goods, which was the reason the Depression ended - US gov't stopped spending.

@EternalRecursion Wealth is products and services created by businesses. Gold is money, not an investment, not a resource, it's money. Foods are products that people want, food is wealth. The more food and other products are produced, the wealthier the society is. Fiat that is not backed by anything is counterfeit. Capital comes out of savings, out of someone's work, counterfeit fiat is no substitute for savings capital. Income taxes tax work and thus impede wealth creation.

@CmdrTobs Inflation is the stated goal of the Federal reserve, all while borrowing the economic basis for the modern Western economies, and you are talking about private banks? Yeah, private banks can borrow that fiat to buy those T-Bills (another way for the Fed to monetize gov't debt.) Public encryption is wonderful, until you want to hold that money in your hands and realize that it ain't real. Beside which, gold backed debit card is as good as gold, and some banks start providing it.

@robinhoodOO7 You believe that unrealized debt is your asset, your fund you can tap into. You believe that your debt of your creditors is your asset. You believe that calling a bunch of IOUs, a bunch of checks you write to yourself a fund changes the game somehow and makes you rich and gives you some sort of time for the next decade or two, to continue paying those ridiculous 'social obligations'. You have another thing coming your way, when just your SS taxes are raised by a factor of 2.

@Lobos222 You see real innovation in consumer electronics and prices fall, it's all due to innovation and efficiencies, and it's because of little regulations when compared to industries such as pharma. Big Pharma is only big, because gov't makes it big. Gov't kills competition, kills innovation, kills people by denying them access to innovation because the price tag on this is hundreds of millions. Why would anybody try and do anything in that business except for monopolies (and the don't.)

@robinhoodOO7 Surplus? :) You are delusional. SS has a gimmick, that was calculated in early eighties, to make it look like SS has surplus. This could not last and it didn't. You saying that SS has surplus is retarded, as SS payments last year have surpassed SS and payroll taxes. US gov't has argued in front of POTUS in Helvering v. Davis, 301 U.S. 619 (1937), that SS payments and SS taxes are unrelated, unearmarked. Maybe if you knew your history a LITTLE, you would've known this FACT.

@dangerouslytalented China is a much more capitalist nation than US or European countries, but their gov't is also ignorant on currency issues, so it suppresses its peoples' purchasing power by printing and subsidizing US consumer. Switzerland tried printing money and saw high inflation, then the people started taking away gov'ts ability to tax income and to print money, that's why the standard of living is going up while EXPORTS are rising and unemployment is 3%. A paradox for a Keynesian.

@EternalRecursion No. Interstate commerce was not gov't working together with anything to do anything good. It was a power grub. First they taxed the airlines. Second they destroyed the existing private rail. Third they destroyed the future of affordable infrastructure, putting everybody into situation, where they had to rely on gov't subsidies (which can never last past certain gov't size takes down the economy, as it's doing now), they have subsidized the car industry, sure, put USA on oil.

@robinhoodOO7 So he is threatening the creditors that he will stop US bond interest payments, while saying it is absolutely imperative that those US does not default. Well, US doesn't have to default if he choses his priorities correctly, and if his priorities is US not defaulting, then he will not stop making those payments and will reassure the creditors of that. But instead he threatens the creditors because he never for a second wants to threaten the US SS recipients. BUt there is caviat

@robinhoodOO7 US Fed does print money. Sure, they call it something else, Bernanke doesn't like to say he prints money but that's what he does. As to US gov't debt being an asset - if anybody holds your debt, that not your asset. If you have to SELL more debt, that's not your asset. Whatever China holds of US, it's not your asset. It's your liability. So how is it, being that simple?

@dangerouslytalented Nonsense. Nations with stronger federal government are doing everything they can to destroy their currencies, if you call that 'better', then OK. Destroying currency by printing it and with nothing to back up the loss of purchasing power only destroys the economy, that's why I like what Switzerland is doing - lower and lower taxes, stronger and stronger currency, more and more export and less and less unemployment.

@robinhoodOO7 No SS surplus is a physical possibility, because SS payments are by LAW cannot be seen as a fund. By law. So no fund can exist, no 3Trillion exists. Whatever they spent, they can only BORROW to pay in SS checks, because there are fewer and fewer people working, and gov't makes sure there are fewer and fewer people working and more and more rely on gov't "help". They are turning you into slaves and you are happy about it? Worst slavery is the type that is taken with gratitude.

@CmdrTobs That's not credit that goes to anything productive. Those banks should not even EXIST today based on the free market solution to the asset bubble inflation that happened in the last decade. The free market solution was the BUST of that bubble and many many businesses needed to go belly up, so that the credit and resources those businesses were taking up, could be freed, assets sold off, bankruptcies declared, debts restructured. None of that happened, thank government.

@CmdrTobs No they cannot. Not UNLESS the government is there protecting them by FDIC. Do you understand what FDIC does, and what its role is in the current destruction of the economy? It created the moral hazard, that prevents people from worrying about who they lend their money to (yes, putting money into a bank means you are giving it that money as a loan). FDIC prevents any free market regulations, because it creates a false sense of security, it's what is known as a moral hazard.

Yeah, but that's a circular definition, it's not a definition at all. Zimbabwe dollar is also what it buys, they printed plenty of them, with face value of hundreds of trillions. What can that buy? Tell me, what is the difference between a 1 dollar bill and a 100 dollar bill? Nothing. USA defaulted in 1971, when it stopped redeeming gold for USD.

@EternalRecursion My analysis is absolutely correct. With OR without the win of WWII, the moment gov't stopped spending, the private business could have that credit back to itself. Yes, USA was nearly the only country with infrastructure intact past WWII. This gave USA the monopoly on labor, chiefly, so USA started producing low cost, high quality consumer goods, even though the workers were paid well exactly due to this monopoly, which US enjoyed for almost 20 years past the war's end.

And how many people are dead today, because FDA got this enormous power by the sixties, that means that it not only requires the proof that a product is safe for consumption, but that in case of drugs, the drugs have efficacy? The cost of compliance with FDA destroys market innovation in drug manufacturing, as any small inventor MUST find a rich donor pharma company to go through this, because FDA costs 600MILLION PER DRUG to get into market.

@robinhoodOO7 US Treasury Bills are not assets, they are not in any way anything that has any value at any point in time, if nobody is buying them. New US gov't debt today is bought up by US federal reserve. They just stopped doing that with QE2 ending. Well, they'll restart it soon enough, now that unemployment is 'unexpectedly' up again (unexpectedly for them only.) Calling DEBT an ASSET is ASININE.

There is no uncertainty. I don't invest into US economy, I don't hold fiat, not because I am uncertain, but because I am certain. I am certain that the government will do everything to destroy the economy and the currency as well. There should be no government SUBSIDIES to any business. There should be no taxes of work, so no corporate or income or payroll taxes. There should be no regulations, because regulations help monopolies to screw you over.

When interest rates go up, how will you service the debt? If the bonds mature, who will buy them, if interest rates go up and they fall in price? Will you print cash to buy them? WHY would your children want to participate in this scam and NOT leave USA to go some place else instead of paying half their checks to SS pyramid?

SS is not a fund, there is no fund, so any money that is paid out today comes out of taxes AND out of borrowing, because SS pays out more than it takes in. There is no fund, so it's a pyramid scheme, any time that there are fewer people paying taxes and more people receiving, the taxes must go up, as they did every time since SS was established.

So whatever you think has value, it doesn't anymore, not with every passing second. That's one huge part of the reason why capital left USA starting 1971 - the money is worth 0, and people with money understand it really well.

@bigvirgotube No, Depression ended when WWII ended. Depressions don't end during such conflicts, because no wealth is created. The civilians are forced into jobs they don't want, building things they don't need, while soldiers are busy blowing shit up. Sure, it's full employment, too bad it doesn't produce anything that economy actually needs or that could be considered wealth.

Gov't enables destruction by preventing competition, by keeping monopolies in power. This means that more resources are mis-allocated to spend on products of those monopolies, while instead they could be used productively elsewhere, increasing overall wealth of the economy, and at the end only wealthy economies can have good environment

Yes, it is unstoppable gov't power, when you give gov't power over your private business. When you give gov't power to tax your work. When you give gov't power to decide who wins and loses in the economy. When you give gov't power to subsidize, create monopolies, tax and distribute income (which is what SS is, an income redistribution program.)

@bigvirgotube You are forgetting completely that the Constitution had to be ratified by the States, which would have never under any circumstances, would have agreed to having a STRONG federal government that would trump their rights. The federal government actually had very little power, but it learned how to usurp that power over the next 200 years, and it learned well.

@robinhoodOO7 No, problem is that you are relying on your gov't for your pension. THAT is your problem. So SS has always gone up in terms of percentage and absolute numbers of how much people are paying into it year to year, it displays all signs of a pyramid scheme, not an insurance program or a fund. Fund IMPLIES that there IS an ASSET allocated, which you can tap into. Gov't DEBT is NOT an ASSET. Any half-assed accountant would explain this to you better than I could.

@CmdrTobs Maybe you guessed by now, maybe you didn't. The financial industry had 115 regulatory bodies prior to 2008 crash. The gov't came up with a 'report', saying that more regulations are needed to prevent more crashes. 115 regulatory bodies wasn't enough, I suppose. Now they have more. But if the gov't came out with the report past the crash, that more regulations is required, why didn't they come out with such 'facts' prior to the crash? Regulations are the reason for the crash

@robinhoodOO7 SS is an income transfer program, whatever they take in, they pay immediately out. Whatever they can't cover with SS taxes, they borrow from Treasury. If any one month the SS payments go above SS payouts, they spend that, because by Helvering v. Davis, 301 U.S. 619 (1937), VERBATIM: "The proceeds of both [employee and employer] taxes are to be paid into the Treasury like internal-revenue taxes generally, and are not earmarked in any way". Thus there could NEVER be a fund.

@CmdrTobs Fractional reserve is NOT a good thing. But in the free market you have a choice - go with a bank that does that, it means more risk, but you may have more in terms of interest being paid to you. If you are not risk averse and you have spare money, you may accept that. On the other hand you can go with a bank that doesn't do that. I like competition in the market for my money, YMMV.

Gov't ENABLES that by limiting liability of companies, who then have the moral hazard of not caring about the consequences of their actions. Gov't is the great enabler of all moral hazard, which gives the market participants ways to go above normal MARKET regulations. Market regulation is quite a thing: you damage me, you get shot. Are they simply people, who have gone through the schooling system, set up by the government to ensure the gov't message stays and cannot be challenged, that gov't monopoly stays? There are people here arguing for unstoppable gov't power, thinking that makes their lives actually better. I am just wondering what is the deal with them?

@Lobos222 It is up to the market to figure out efficacy, or it should be. As to safety... do you actually think that gov't has an invested interest of some sort to protect you? Really? Gov't regulates, which means it has the power to stop your business cold. The only interest is money and power - for you to give it to them at every step. The way to handle safety is by removing gov't limiting liability and by having a working justice system, which gov't prevents you from having access to.

@EternalRecursion So even by what you wrote, how does that in any way prove my analysis wrong, when in fact it only underlines the correctness of it? US became a productive country past WWII and it had monopoly on production for a while, all while establishing Bretton Woods system, which allowed US to spend money it didn't have eventually, once it defaulted on its promise and an obligation to exchange dollars for gold.

@dangerouslytalented USA on the other hand is getting higher and higher taxes (it's already going to be above 35% personal income for the year 2012 for example, the different brackets see the taxes go up to 39%), USA is getting more and more regulations (so you won't have cheaper food, you'll get more expensive food, as the gov't helps the monopolies to destroy smaller competitors with regulations), fewer and fewer freedoms, as shown by the gov't treatment of citizens, destruction of currency.

@CmdrTobs Really, I calculated wrong by looking at all the commodities and real money? Well, I guess you'd rather stick with your gov'ts assessment of CPI and core CPI etc. They are going to tell you that you have no inflation to speak of, while printing trillions. I am looking at prices from 2003 all the way to 2010. It's a much more averaged look at things than even if looking at one year only.

@CmdrTobs No, that was not my point. My point is not that you have make somebody liable through regulations, that is never a good idea, it backfires, makes part of the gov't structure, as they fight these regulations. My point is that there shouldn't be gov't limiting anybody's liability or subsidizing anybody, be it a person or a business. Please understand my point on gov't: it should do nothing but minimum military. That's all it should do, nothing else.

@CmdrTobs Money must have value. Gresham's law proves it - any time gov't wants to enforce value of a currency, which really has no value, this currency drives out good money. So if I am selling something - I only want VALUABLE money in exchange for my product, if you are buying something, you want to give me valueless money for my product. In absence of gov't intervention, bad money disappears from circulation. When gov't enforces valueless money by law, good money leaves circulation.

@CmdrTobs As to being able to replace every dollar in circulation: 1. Who says that every dollar must be replaced? Large portion of them should disappear, they are more worthless than the paper they are printed upon. 2. Surely the remaining fiat must be revalued, as gold goes up in nominal terms (and it always stays stable in real terms.)

@dch3348 US Constitution, article 1, section 10, check that out. But gold was money before US existed, Constitution simply acknowledges that fact. Government cannot tell you what to use as money, only what it wants taxes to be paid in, and if they want worthless greenbacks, that's their problem. Bernanke said gold isn't money, though it's in the Constitution, that it is the only money. He thinks it's just a cute tradition and money must have no value at all.

Well, isn't that convenient, to try and disassociate yourself from your gov't, as if your gov't is some form of a productive entity, making money, making profits, investing, increasing the capital, etc. It's not. The 3Trillion you like to mention never existed. There is no fund, there was never a fund. They never had a fund that they held any insurance money in, no trust fund, no mutual fund, no insurance fund. Myth.

@CmdrTobs A poor economy with plenty of government will still have awful economy - USSR is a great example of that, with Chernobyl being one of the prime examples of how things are run by such governments. What do we know from Chernobyl, while comparing it to Fukushima? That the capitalist pig dogs have a much better track record, safer operations and no casualties so far due to the radiation output of their accident, caused by insane natural catastrophe. Compoare to Communist ran plant...

@dangerouslytalented Income must not be taxed under any circumstances and don't kid yourself, if taxes do have to go up, only those with fewer means will be paying them, because those with more means will makes sure they don't, and GOOD FOR THEM. What lead to massive personal and gov't debt is borrowing and spending beyond the means, not someone's ability to generate more income for themselves. Gov't shouldn't be bailing anybody out, people or businesses, that's your real problem.

@greedyfoot Wow! New deal was part of the reason for why the depression lasted as long as it did. Any government spending at all is never something that can improve economy. It can get some people to spend some money, but it does not improve the ability of the economy to generate wealth - increase production capacity. That's why they ALWAYS say: we need MORE stimulus. Of-course they do. Once the current one is gone, it's all back into depression. Spending money delays the inevitable.

@robinhoodOO7 Gov't only has money that it can collect from people at any point in time. US gov't got 'lucky', that it can print currency, which is then exported to the world, because the currency of US by chance is the so called 'reserve'. US can also print money, creating inflation, which is what they do However this is what destroyed the US productive capacity - inflation via gov't printing, which drove capital out of US and out of US denominated assets US gov't debt is not an asset

@bigvirgotube Dude, a depression is not only about high unemployment. It's about not having any productive output. USSR had full employment as well. The world was in full employment during the war, so who cares? Full employment during a war still means that productive output cannot be increased, and building tanks and bombs, so they can be blown apart and kill some people is not productive output. Sure, the fight has to happen and one of the sides has to lose, but that's not an economy.
