  4. Actually, Putin has been trying to rebuild the Russian Empire since he gained control. Recall the Second Chechen War, where he used the Russian Military to bring them back under his thumb. Which gave him an excuse that, all of a sudden, the West is too close to Russia and threatens him. Chechnya puts him next to Georgia, Georgia puts him closer to the Middle East, Transnistria puts him close to Romania, Eastern Ukraine and Crimea lets him close down the Black Sea, etc. Now he's after the rest of Ukraine. Each Invasion actually puts him closer to the Western Military Powers. Yet that very closeness gives him an excuse to grab more Buffer States to hide behind, just like the Warsaw Pact did for the Soviet Union.
