It's frustrating as a materials scientist to watch EVs. We're wasting very precious minerals when we aren't even making something good out of them. It's like taking rare expensive wine and giving it to an 18 year old and telling them to throw a kegger. They go through it quickly, throw it up and don't appreciate what they're drinking.

@ottovonbismarck7094 that's at today's prices. Lithium is skyrocketing because of EV demand making lots of things now cost prohibitive. There is no cost efficient way of recycling lithium to remake EV batteries from EV batteries - it's a holy grail right now that won't be realized for a few years still. We'd run out of lithium before everyone got an electric car.

Most also have not come to the end of their life because they only became popular in the last 5 years. In about 10 years it will be a real talking point.

Lithium also cannot be recycled, so you can't keep it going. Cobalt can but i don't think they can get it back to the same quality. China has been going around and cornering the market on all the rare earth mines and driving others out of the business by renting/buying the mines preventing anyone else from getting minerals out. It's a monopoly that's driving up the market like crazy. Btw...graphite isn't toxic, if it was tons of little kids who ate pencil lead would be dying of cancer.

One of the best alternatives is what Chevy does (think others may do this now too but Tesla doesn't). They allow you to pull into any Chevy dealer and change your battery for a fresh one that's charged. Don't think it's a long term plan since the majority of cost is for the battery.

Solar only breaks even when you have those tax breaks and live in an area where you don't get weather. Many who put solar on their roof end up needing their roof replaced - they never consider that as part of the "price of solar".
